A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Friday granted bail to the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. Also granted bail by the court presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole was El-Zakzaky’s wife, Zeenatudeen.

The court ordered the immediate and unconditional release of El-Zakzaky and his wife. Justice Kolawole also fined the Federal Government N50 million for the incarceration of the duo. Both of them are to be paid N25 million each.

El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention since December last year shortly after the clash of the sect members with the military between December 12 and 14, 2015.

Members of the IMN, popularly known as Shiites, had blocked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, and refused to allow them passage even after plea from the military.

This resulted in a prolonged clash, which some, including a panel set up by the Kaduna State Government, led to the killing of over 1,500 persons.
