Ekiti State University teachers on Tuesday made good their threat to commence an indefinite industrial action over non-payment of their two-months’ salaries.

The offices of the dons were under lock and key as all the lecturers stayed away from work.

The teachers, acting under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, vowed that they would not return to the classrooms until their salaries are paid.

Our correspondent gathered that lecture rooms and theatres were empty while some students who showed up in classes were busy reading.

The teachers expressed disappointment that government has not offered any explanation for the non-payment of their January and February salaries.

The EKSU-ASUU Chairman, Prof. Olufayo Oluodo, told journalists that the academic staff had no option but to stay away from work because the non-payment of their salaries had made life difficult for them.

“Our members have no money again to be moving up and down. We are being owed two months and we have not been paid at all this year. We have made our position known to the university authorities and we have written to the state government on the matter.

“We have met with the Deputy Governor to resolve the matter and another meeting with government has been slated for tomorrow.”

Similarly, other unions in the university – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union – have also declared indefinite strikes to protest the non-payment of their January and February salaries.

The SSANU Chairman, Kolawole Falade, and NASU Chairman, Tope Akanni, said they are also going on indefinite strike to press home their demand for the payment of the two-month arrears of their salaries.

They called on the authorities concerned to ensure the payment of their salaries to make life easy for them and their dependants.
