Police in Indonesia’s Resort Island of Bali have detained an Indian man convicted of killing 20 women in his home country with cyanide, reports said on Monday.

Mohan Kumar was arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport as he arrived from Australia, Airport Immigration Chief Yosef Widodo, told newsmen.

The report said that police were tipped off by Interpol in Australia.

However, officers could not be reached immediately for comment.

Local media reported the man was also known as Cyanide Mohan, a 53-year-old former teacher who had confessed to the murders of 20 women between 2005 and 2009.

Kumar was sentenced to death by local Indian courts in December 2013 but he escaped.

According to Indian media, he married several women at temples, promising not to take any dowry.

The report said that Kumar later killed them by giving them cyanide disguised as an anti-pregnancy pill and decamped with their jewellery.
