Jeddah raids: Saudi police arrest 16 suspected terrorists

The Saudi Police say they have arrested 16 suspected terrorists in connection with the recent Jeddah raids, Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry said that police on Saturday, raided two hideouts of the suspects in Jeddah, killing two extremists and arresting 16 others, including 10 Pakistanis.

The ministry confirmed that the two of the suspects killed were Saudis.

It said that one of the suspects had connection with the deadly blasts that targeted two mosques, including the 2015 attack that killed 15 police personnel in Asir region.

The ministry also said that the police confiscated three grenades, eight explosives, 48 explosive-making chemicals and metal pieces from the raided hideouts and seized guns and bullets.

The ministry said that raids and recent arrests were part of ongoing counter terrorism operations.

Since the surfacing of the Islamic State (IS) militant group in 2014, Saudi Arabia has arrested 566 terrorists who formed eight sleeping cells, including six women and local newspaper said this week.
