The FCT Satellite Towns Development Agency (FCTSDA) on Monday said that all dump sites in the territory would soon be privatised to boost effective disposal of wastes.

The FCTSDA Desk Officer, Okoh Abani, told newsmen in Abuja that privatisation was necessary to improve the well-being of FCT inhabitants.

He said that the administration had already commenced the issuance of licences to private contractors.

According to Abani, the privatisation when completed would reduce indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) had warned residents of the FCT against living around official dumpsites within the territory.

Joe Ukairo, the Head of Information of AEPB, said it was saddening to note that a lot of people still live around dumpsites, exposing them to diseases.

“For example, there is a clan in Gwoza landfill; we take our time to sensitise them on the health implications of what they are doing.

“Also, an NGO has been working with them; educating them on hygiene and also on how to live safely from waste- to- wealth.

“Those who live within these areas have encroached and we have reiterated that it is not ideal to either eat from or live in the waste management areas,” he said.
