Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, on Friday said that he was on sabbatical in politics as he still considered himself a professional university lecturer.

The governor said this in a speech at the attestation ceremony of 164 medical and dental doctors held at the NUGA Hall of the University of Maiduguri.

Shettima, who is a former lecturer at the institution before he took up an employment with a bank and then went into partisan politics, said he hoped to come back to his first love, lecturing.

The governor, who used the occasion to inaugurate 10 blocks of two-bedroom flats donated by the state government to the institution, said his government was ready to partner with the university.

“I consider myself a lecturer on sabbatical leave to banking sector and politics and I hope to come back to the university community as a lecturer,” he said.

He explained that when he assumed duty as a governor, he inherited 28 doctors, saying the state government now had over 120 medical doctors in its hospitals.

Shettima added that his government had also constructed and rehabilitated doctors and nursing quarters.

“My government sent 70 female medical students to study medicine in Sudan and the government will continue to send 70 medical students abroad every year,” the governor added.

He said he considered every resident of Maiduguri an indigene of Borno, noting that members of the university community paid the highest revenue to the Borno State Government.
