Fresh facts have emerged about the reason why Senator Buruji Kashamu withdrew the N20 billion libel suit he had instituted against former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Buruji reportedly pulled the brakes on the suit because Obasanjo had forgiven him after the lawmaker reportedly saved him from being poisoned.

The entire process started when policemen from the Zone 2 command, Onikan, Lagos, arrested two persons who allegedly posed as daughter to former Obasanjo and an intelligence officer.

The duo, Peter Uwakala and Victoria Alaegbu, were said to have approached Kashamu on the pretence that they would resolve the political rift between him and the former president.

The suspects who were arraigned at the Igbosere Magistrate Court on June 5, 2015 and have since been remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, had allegedly planned to poison Obasanjo.

The suspects were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo and their matter was adjourned to July 31, 2015, for further hearing.

They were arrested following a complaint lodged by Kashamu at Zone 2, last month, after they met him on May 8, 2015, and allegedly demanded for an unspecified amount of money from him in order to harm Obasanjo.

After the report by Kashamu, the X-Squad of the command was detailed to investigate the matter during which it was discovered that the suspects’ claim of being close to the former president was false.

The police report in response to Kashamu’s petition read thus, “The fact of the case was that the complainant alleged in his verbal complaint that the duo of Peter Uwakala and Victoria Alaegbu falsely represented themselves as an intelligence officer and daughter to the former President Obasanjo respectively.

“This was under the pretence that they were going to resolve the political rift between him and Obasanjo.

“He stressed that the duo met with him at a hotel, where the latter who had collected N500,000 from his younger brother, made some uncomplimentary and derogatory remarks that Obasanjo ‘is so bad and wicked to the extent that his staff hate and are unhappy with him.

“Hence, they said they would poison him if they see the opportunity.”

“He added that he had to report to the police upon his suspicion of foul play by the suspects. Investigation conducted revealed that the duo were impersonators.

“From the foregoing, it was established that both Peter Uwakala and Victoria Alaegbu actually committed the offences alleged by the complainant and have been charged accordingly in line with the prescription of the law.”

Confirming this, the senator’s media aide, Austin said, “The report shows how Kashamu saved Obasanjo from food poisoning despite their political differences.

“It was based on this gesture by Senator Kashamu that Chief Obasanjo said he had forgiven him of all their differences and Kashamu in turn decided to withdraw the N20b libel suit against the ex-President.

“Kashamu’s conduct goes a long way to show that despite his political differences on principles with Obasanjo, he does not wish him Obasanjo ill because he respects the sanctity of human life and also fears God.”
