The voluble former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday narrowly escaped death after his car got involved in an accident along the Airport Road in Abuja, having violated traffic law.

An eye witness told our correspondent that the former governor was moving in a motorcade towards the City Gate when his vehicle ran into another car near the Bolingo Junction close to the Ship House.

“My wife and I were coming from the NNPC Mega Station and we stopped at the traffic light by Bolingo Hotel Junction. When the green light showed and we made to move, there was this siren blaring Mercedes Benz jeep that came from the town and almost crashed onto my car. I don’t know how we escaped but another car behind the jeep hit the car behind me and tumbled on its side.

“I and my wife rushed out of our vehicle and helped the driver bring out his boss. When we brought him out, we found that it was former governor, Godswill Akpabio.

“At the time we brought him out, the siren was still blaring. We put him in the other vehicle and he was rushed to the National Hospital.”

The source said that Akpabio was badly shaken and was in a traumatic condition when he was brought out of the crashed vehicle, disclosing that the former governor was apparently rushing out of the city when his convoy beat the traffic and crashed.

The driver to the former governor, simply called David confirmed the accident but said that his boss was in stable condition.

He however declined to speak on how the accident happened or the circumstances that led to the crash.

The Chief Information Officer of National Hospital, Hajia Rabiah Labaran, told journalists in her office that Akpabio was brought to the hospital by some FRSC officers who rescued him from the scene of the accident.

Labaran said, “He (Akpabio) was brought in this morning after he had a car crash as I learnt. He was brought in from the Bolingo Hotel junction where a vehicle crashed into his own vehicle from behind.

“Lucky enough, when they brought him after the preliminary check–up, it was found that he did not have any serious injury. He was talking when he was brought in and they gave him necessary attention at the trauma unit.

“I learnt that as of this afternoon, (12:30pm), he was taken to the private wing of the hospital for proper care but there was no serious injury, though it has not been disclosed what kind of injury. It is something he can come over in a few days. He is currently recuperating. He was with his driver but the driver did not sustain injury,” she added.
