The Senator representing Bauchi Central, Hama Isa Misau has said that the Senate will continue to support ‎its President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki because of the injustice being perpetrated against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Misau said though he is not a lawyer but it is obvious that the case against Saraki on the Declaration of Assets was being manipulated and a script written based on mischief and ill-will is being acted in all the courts before whom the matter has been taken.

“The impression I am getting is that some people are playing God, believing that they can determine the fate of Saraki and they are using ‎the judiciary as instrument of witch-hunt and persecution.

“What is happening is not a war against corruption‎. It is a war against Saraki using corrupt means to hound him to submission. This means however have grievous implication for the proposed anti-corruption agenda of the Buhari administration because you cannot successfully prosecute anti-graft war by selectively targeting individuals”, he said.

The Senator added that his coleagues who witnessed the proceedings at the tribunal on the three occasions Saraki appeared before it were convinced that the defendant was only being targeted because he is Senate President and that the body language from the tribunal chairman clearly shows that he cannot do justice to the defendant in the present case.

He added that Senators will continue to support Saraki and even attend the court sessions because of the belief that injustice to one is injustice to all.

He urged those behind the scheme to bring Saraki down to desist as their actions have several implication for the ruling party, the government and the nation.

“Their actions portent that there is continued division within our great party and a divided party cannot effectively run a good government. Also, they are creating a wrong impression that the executive and judiciary‎ are ganging up against the legislature. More importantly, they are reducing the War against corruption to a selective war designed to suppress political opponents.

“Why‎ are they targeting Saraki? They thought they could use the Tribunal to achieve what they could not achieve during the election of the leadership of the Upper Chamber of our legislature.

“Saraki has continued to be popular among Senators and party members who are impressed by the leadership he has displayed in all circumstances, issues and cases.

“His handling of the ministerial screening and constitution of committees have shown that he is an asset to the Senate, the APC and the country.

“I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to check those who are using his name to perpetrate and perpetuate injustice to stop. The President as a leader should not turn away while this misdeeds continue.”, Misau added.
