Saudi Arabia has declared Sunday, June 25, as the first day of Eid Al-Fitr after reported sightings of the new moon.
The Supreme Court announced the start of Eid holiday on Sunday, Saudi News Agency reported.
The court earlier called on Muslims in the kingdom to sight the crescent moon on Saturday evening.
Several countries also announced that Eid will be on Sunday, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and Japan.
Astronomer Khalid Al-Zaaq, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences confirmed in his Twitter account that “Eid begins Sunday astronomically.”
He added that “the astronomical calculations based on followed criteria suggest that Sunday is first day of Eid Al-Fitr.”
Eid is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, which marks the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan.
