The three reverend sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Convent kidnapped in Edo state have been released.

According to PUNCH, the sisters were freed on Saturday after spending a total of 53 days in custody.

While one of them – Veronica Ajayi – was reportedly released on Saturday evening, the other two were said to have returned late in the night.

Also reportedly freed are three females who were kidnapped along with the sisters.

Agatha Osarekhoe, superior-general of the convent, was quoted to have said the sisters returned to the convent unhurt.

It is not clear if any ransom was paid for their release.

The six of them were kidnapped by gunmen on November 14 from the convent located in Iguoriakhi, Edo.

Some Nigerians, including Alfred Martins, Archbishop of Lagos, had called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims.
