Ishola Ibrahim Obanla is one of the councillorship aspirants in Orile Agege Local Council Development Area of Agege. Coming out on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he stresses that his intention of coming into politics is to participate in the socio-political and economic development of his community. He spoke on other issues too. Excerpts:

Why are you in politics?
I am in politics to contribute my quota to the development of my country. I have always nursed the ambition of participating in the development of the country and whenever the opportunity presents itself, I seize it. That was why, when in school, I participated in student unionism and was one of the leaders. At that point, I was able to garner some experience.

Now that I have graduated, I am taking my participation in the development of my country to the next level by contesting for an elective post in Agege Local Council Development Authority. My main source of inspiration is the need to serve the people and make life better, especially, for our people at the grassroots.

What do you think makes you well qualified for the councillorship post you are contesting for?
Experience. That is what I rely for on. That is my major credential. When people look at my antecedent, I believe they will be able to make the right choice. As a student, I was a member of Leo Club, which is the student version of Lions Club. I was also a member of the Junior Chamber.

And like I said earlier on, I participated in student unionism. So, I have experience in humanitarian services; leadership activities and I want to show example as a youth on how things should be properly done. I am going for the post of a councilor and being a graduate, I believe I stand a good chance. I can represent my people anywhere and fight for their rights where and when necessary.

How popular are you among the people of your constituency?
I am very popular. I started my campaign about three years ago and I have been carrying out different activities to improve the lives of the people for the better. I support the needy, the less-privileged. There a few things I have done for my people and they have been very proud of me. I am very popular among them and they can’t wait to have me go into office.

Being a young man, what message do you have for youths generally?
I want us to be diligent; be focused and show humility. We need to eschew violence to enable us live in peace and harmony. We need to follow the path of our great leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has been giving us great leadership in politics and other spheres of life.

The same with our leaders at the local government and state levels like Hon Taofeek Adaranijo, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and Hon Yinka Ogundimu among others, who have been bringing us together and ensuring development of our society.

Youths should shun electoral violence. They should participate more in politics because they are the leaders of tomorrow. They should learn the rope to be able to make headway in future. They should defend their rights in civilised ways instead of going into violence. For example, if I had been used for violence, I would not be in a position to vie for the councillorship post; I won’t think of making life better for my people if violence is all I think of.
