The House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a motion urging it to summon the Chairman, Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega.
Its House Majority Leader, Rep. Leo Ogor (PDP-Delta), had in a motion at the plenary session, urged the house to summon Jega to explain INEC’s preparedness on the forthcoming general elections.
However, Members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the House, who formed majority in the chamber, together with few others, rejected the motion.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the motion, which was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Aminu Tambawal, did not scale through, although similar motion was passed by the Senate on Tuesday.
The House has 360 members, out of which APC had 182; PDP, 155 and other parties, 23.
Meanwhile, the House would on Thursday debate the legality or otherwise of the deployment of military to monitor the forthcoming general elections.
This followed a motion by the House Minority Leader, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila (APC-Lagos), who called for extensive debates on the matter.
“It is a matter that is very important. It is a matter that this House has to address to determine whether the military has a role to play in our elections,” Gbajabiamila said.
