The Anambra Government has re-named the state university after the late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu as part of events marking the second year of his death.
Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra who made the announcement at the event which also marked Ojukwu’s 80th birthday in one of the university’s campuses at Igbariam, also announced N5 billion donation to improve upon the standard of the university.
He gave a bus each to the Student Union Government of the two campuses at Igbariam and Uli, and two security vans each to the two campuses.
He said the money, which he described as “high impact contributions’’ by the Anambra Government and Federal Government to the university, would make the institution to become one of the best in the country.
Obi said the State Government had awarded N1.3 billion contract for road projects to Igbariam campus of the institution and had also agreed to write off N500 million debt owed by the institution.
He said the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was building hostel blocks at the university at a cost of N1.5 billion, stressing that he was working hard to make federal government to assist the schools with some buildings.
Bianca, Ojukwu’s wife, commended Obi for all he had done for the family since the death of the Biafran war lord.
She urged Ndigbo to continue to support the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the political party her husband led till his death “because there lies Igbo aspirations.’’
Chukwuemeka Ojukwu Jr said “if APGA fails, Ojukwu fails and Igbos have failed,” and commended the state government for the honour done to his father.
Victor Umeh, National Chairman of APGA, said the party’s former National Leader who was born on Nov. 4, 1933, was not dead but still lived fresh in the hearts of many because of his leadership qualities.
He said Ojukwu’s contributions to Ndigbo would never be wished away, and commended the Anambra government for immortalising him.
