The special adviser on media and publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, has clarified the president’s role in the petroleum ministry.

Adesina said the President will not be typecast like a minister, but a supervisor of the ministry.

The clarification has denied some senators itching to question Buhari on how will run the petroleum ministry, 39 years after he was appointed there, the opportunity of doing so.

The president already has a minister of state-designate for the oil ministry: Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the present Managing director of the state oil company, NNPC.

“President Buhari is not going to be designated as Minister but will supervise the Ministry, he has all it takes to supervise the ministry”, Adesina said in a tweet that has gone viral.

Adesina also defended President Buhari’s nominees, some of whom have been attacked as being too old.

“People who have been nominated are qualified and are Nigerians. Talking of age, there is a saying that “age does not matter”. We must rather talk of the mental age rather than the chronological age. It is not the chronological age that matters….”

Adesina also gave an assurance that the President would appoint ministers in the 15 states where there has been no nomination.

“President Buhari would respect the constitution. And the constitution says Ministers must be appointed from each state.”
