A Minna-based businessman, Nwakwa Martins, on Wednesday committed suicide at his residence near a popular hotel in Tunga Minna, leaving behind his pregnant wife and five children.

It was gathered that the late businessman, who owns a popular electronic shop along the Old Airport Road, Minna, allegedly shot himself in the stomach around 5.30 am.

It was gathered that the deceased, at about 5am, left his pregnant wife in a room and went to another room far from her, where he shot himself while the wife was deep asleep.

It was learnt that the wife was not aware of her husband’s whereabouts when she woke up around 7am and immediately raised the alarm.

Her neighbours were said to have told her that they heard a gunshot in one parts of the compound earlier in the morning.

The neighbours and wife, it was further learnt, went to the part of the house and discovered Martins in the pool of his own blood and was immediately rushed to Minna General Hospital, where he reportedly died.

The incident was reported to Tudun Wada Police Division, Minna, while the DPO,  Francis Ekanem, led a team of policemen to the residence of the deceased and recovered a pump action rifle that  the deceased used at to shoot himself.

The Police Public Relation Officer, Oguche Adamu Richard, confirmed the incident and said that it was suspected that the man committed suicide, but did not leave behind a note.

The PPRO stated the police findings at the residence revealed that there was no sign of external attack on the house, suggesting that it might be a suicide but noted that police were still investigating the matter.
