We can’t avoid to mess up 2015 elections – Jega

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned its personnel to avoid anything that could scuttle the 2015 general elections, saying the attention of the world is on the commission.

According to the commission’s bulletin obtained in Abuja, the INEC boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega issued the warning while addressing staff during the just-concluded four-day retreat held at the Asaa Pyramid Hotel, Kaduna.

He urged the commission’s staff and Resident Electoral Commissioners to be more committed and very vigilant.

“All eyes are on us – our friends, partners, concerned citizens and indeed even our adversaries. We must be more vigilant, be more committed and strengthen our harmony at all levels to achieve the desired results,” Jega stated.

He also urged management and staff of the INEC “to continue to do the job with integrity and in an impartial and non-partisan manner so that no one will make allegations that will impugn your integrity.”

According to him, in reviewing the commission’s sundry programmes and plans, which are to be implemented this year, it is evident that there would be “gaps.”

Jega therefore charged  the  participants at the retreat to ensure that those gaps were filled and that fundamental things that needed to be done were implemented.

He added, “We must work assiduously to bridge or mitigate those observable gaps. In implementing the programmes and plans leading to the 2015 General Elections, the Commission would ensure that competencies were improved and that those who had the capacity to deliver more efficiently were given the opportunity to do so.”
