The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has advised motorists in Plateau to desist from speeding, night driving, overloading, wrongful overtaking among others that could threaten the safety of people and property on the highways these ember months.
Daniel Sayi, the Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO) in charge of Jos Zone gave this advice on Monday at a rally organised to commemorate the 2108 African Road Safety and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Jos. The event has the theme: “Roads Have Stories”.
According to Sayi, speeding, night driving, and other unwholesome behaviours drivers exhibit on the highways remain the major causes of road crashes, hence the need for all road users to obey traffic rules and regulations.
“We are here to remember those who lost their lives through road crashes and to also remind ourselves, who are still living on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations at all times so as to curb the rate of accidents on our highways.
“It is true we have bad stories emanating from our roads, but most of these ugly stories come because of our human error and so we have to do the needful to rid off these bad stories.
“In these ember months, I want to urge all drivers to desist from speeding, night driving, overloading, wrongful overtaking and use of phones while driving so as to reduce the spate of accidents on our highways,” he said.
The ZCO stressed the need for drivers to desist from driving under the influence of alcohol, and warned that anyone caught by his men would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
Sayi also warned against underage driving, and called on qualified drivers to obey all regulations while plying the highways.
On her part, Mrs Pat Emeordi, the Corps Sector Commander in Plateau, called for more collaborations and support from motorists and indeed the public to enable FRSC achieve its mandate of ensuring safer highways for all.
“We are determined to stem the tide of crashes on our highways but this can only be possible with the support and cooperation of the public.
“As we go deeper and deeper into the ember months, motorists must obey traffic rules and regulations so as to curtail the number of accidents as well deaths on the highways,” she said.
