FG to boost inspectorate division to check mass exam failures

The Federal Government is to boost the inspectorate division of the Ministry of Education as part of measures to check mass failure among students in general examinations under the West African Examination Council, WAEC and National Examination Council, NECO.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who disclosed this at the 50th anniversary and 22nd convocation ‎ceremony of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, at the weekend, explained that the measure would enable the government to monitor the quality of teaching and infrastructure available in secondary schools in the country.

He said that government was working out plans for the regular training and retraining of teachers through various short-term workshops, courses and seminars.

While lauding the achievements of the management of the polytechnic, the minister stressed the need for more tertiary institutions to integrate entrepreneurial studies into their academic programmes.

“I am aware and pleased that Auchi Polytechnic has a well developed entrepreneurial curriculum and has commissioned an entrepreneurial village for skills acquisition with the sole purpose of producing job creators and not job seekers.

“Government is very particular about the development of vocational and technology education and believes that strengthening this will reduce the high rate of unemployment of youths and ensure wealth creation,” the minister said.

Earlier, the Rector, Dr. Philipa Idogho, explained that a total of 3,748 students graduated with Higher National Diploma while 4,987 graduands were awarded with National Diploma.

Idogho urged the graduating students to make their marks as good ambassadors of the institution wherever they find themselves.

While highlighting the achievements of the polytechnic, she also noted that the institution’s drive for improvement had facilitated the establishment of five e-learning centres, with a combined capacity of 815 users.
