An early morning inferno has ravaged Jafojo Street, Iyana-Ipaja, along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, leaving on its trail, several houses, cars and other valuables burnt into ashes.

Eyewitness account told our correspondent that no fewer than nine cars, five commercial buses, many shops and houses were burnt in a fire incident.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident started from a petrol tanker along the expressway, which spilled its content on the gutter that subsequently sparked the fire.

The fire first started from one of the houses on the street but quickly spread to other buildings after men of the State Fire Service failed to respond quickly to the scene.

One of the residents of the area told New Mail that the fire fighters even had to leave the scene at some point after they ran out of fire extinguishers and water.

The state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, during his visit to the scene of the incident, expressed the preparedness of the state government to offer assistance to the victims of the fire incident to lessen the burden of their losses.

Also, the State Police Commissioner, Kayode Aderanti, who accompanied Governor Ambode promised to provide adequate security to the area to prevent hoodlums from taking undue advantage of the situation.
