Security personnel on Wednesday averted a fire incident at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Dr Jaf Momoh, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, told newsmen that the “minor fire” was promptly put out by the staff “without any incident.”
He said that the fire started in the UPS room of the hospital, but was controlled with the cooperation of security personnel, who mobilised to control the incident.
“A minor fire broke out in the UPS room; the air conditioner caught fire as a result of power surge, which was promptly put off. But it was promptly brought under control with hydrants and fire extinguishers.
“No casualties and no equipment were affected, the situation was brought under control within a few minutes,” he said.
Momoh added that though the incident caused panic among members of staff and visitors at the hospital, the situation had remained calm.
He said measures had been put in place to prevent a recurrence of the incident in and around the hospital, especially as some staff have proceeded for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Expended canisters of fire extinguishers were seen around the entrance to the affected room, while four fire trucks belonging to the Federal Fire Service were seen on alert for any eventuality.
