The two-day heavy downpour has thrown residents of the border communities of Ijoko, Oke-Aro, Abule-Ekun, Akute and Alagbole axis of Ogun State into serious difficult due to the abandoned road construction by the Ogun state government, which has worsened the flooding situation in the areas.
The axis, falls along the Berger-Sango expressway undergoing reconstruction by the Ogun State government, but which has since being abandoned by the Ibukunle Amosun-led government.
Residents in these communities have since the rain began, suffered tremendous pains as most of the roads, particularly those close to the construction areas, have been virtually rendered impassable.
Worst hit, are those living, or commenting through Alagbole, Akute and the Abule Ekun axis, as the areas have almost been completely cut-off, making it extremely difficult for vehicles to pass through.
Residents have been wading through dirty water every time it rains as the flood usually takes over the make-shift bridge put together by the community and contractor before leaving site.
Because of the nature of the road, most residents have had to pay exorbitant fares going and coming in every day as transport fares in these communities have skyrocketed, even before the fuel scarcity problem started.
Though many of the residents have applauded the decision of the state government to flag-off the construction, they however, expressed frustrations at the near abandonment o the project, more than one year after.
The rehabilitation of the road which spanned from the Sango-Otta end through Ijoko-Ogba-Iyo, through Agbado, Olambe, Akute to Alagbole was flagged off mid 2014, but until work stopped about mid last year, only the bridges are nearing completion.
Some residents who spoke with New Mail said that the contractors, Chinese Construction Company, have not been seen at any of the site of the bridges since late last year.
“This project is a good one, no doubt, but we have seen clearly that it is more of a political project.
“Construction of these bridges began last year when the governor knew he would be running for second term in office. Look at it now, nothing is going on here. Since last year December, the contractors have not done anything on the bridges at Agbado, Alagbole and at Abule Ekun,” a resident who spoke under anonymity said.
