As the country gears up for general elections later this month, Senator Ademola Adeleke, the executive governor of Osun State, has advised politicians to use peaceful electioneering tactics.

Following the return to the state of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, violent activities, such as the vandalization of political billboards and posters, have risen during the last five days. The previous governor openly encouraged rebellion against the government.

The State Governor spoke out against the increasingly disruptive nature of campaigns in some regions of the state, particularly the vandalism of billboards and posters while hosting thought leaders from Osun state in his office on Friday evening.

“I urge politicians and those who support them to maintain peace. We must cultivate a culture of peaceful campaigning free of violence and questionable behavior. Voting is not and should not be taken as war”.

“Voting rights are exercised by the populace during elections. As political leaders, it is our duty to promote our causes and candidates in order to win support from the public. Spreading and using violence as a political tactic is unacceptable.

“In particular, I deplore the rising vandalism of election-related billboards and posters. I suffered throughout the most recent governor’s race. Politicians should be aware that the electorate ultimately chooses its representatives.

“Those responsible for these horrific acts must stop right away. Regardless of their political identity, I’m also ordering security officials to detain and charge anyone seen destroying campaign signs and billboards. We must make our electoral process rational, lawful, and orderly again “said the Governor.
