The Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has described poverty and unemployment as two key factors responsible for insecurity in the country.

Amaechi spoke at the weekend when the new United States Ambassador to Nigeria, James F. Enwistle paid him a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt.

He also explained that until leaders in the country rise up to the challenge of dealing with the issues of poverty, wealth creation and unemployment; insecurity may remain a lingering problem in our society.

According to him, “until we deal with the issues of poverty, wealth creation and unemployment, then we may not be able to solve the problem of insecurity”, Amaechi said.

“I am aware that you are leading a delegation on oil theft, I know how qualified you are to take up the assignment in one of the best countries in West Africa with all sorts of complexities that will unravel as you carry out the assignment.
“We in Rivers State will be delighted to work with you, and I remember that when I was Speaker, the US used to work around here in the state, but now, we no longer see them”, Amaechi explained.

Governor Amaechi urged the US delegation to ensure that they use their expertise to assist the government address the issues.

Earlier, Ambassador Enwistle said the delegation was in Rivers State to learn and educate the people on the current situation, and expressed confidence that the knowledge gain as a result of his experience in other African countries would help yield positive results.
