Romelu Lukaku has scored in each of his last nine games in European competition for Inter Milan

Romelu Lukaku scored a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser as Inter Milan rescued a point against Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening Champions League Group B game.

After a goalless first half, Belgium forward Lukaku put Inter ahead from close range with his eighth goal in eight games for club and country.

But Monchengladbach’s Ramy Bensebaini levelled from the penalty spot after Arturo Vidal lunged into Marcus Thuram inside the box.

The referee initially waved play on after Vidal’s challenge before stopping the game moments later and pointing to the spot after watching a replay of the incident on a pitchside screen.

Inter substitute Lautaro Martinez hit the bar before Jonas Hofmann kept his composure to fire the German visitors ahead after sprinting clear.

In an enthralling encounter, Lukaku had the last word when he managed to scramble the ball home at the far post with his knee after a corner was headed on by substitute Alessandro Bastoni.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Group D rivals Atalanta hammered Midtjylland 4-0 in Denmark.

In Group C, Olympiakos got their campaign off to a flying start with a 1-0 win over Marseille in Greece after substitute Ahmed Hassan scored a stoppage time winner.

Earlier in Group A, Lokomotiv Moscow rescued a point in a 2-2 draw with RB Salzburg to halt their five game losing run in the Champions League, sharing the spoils in the competition for the first time since a 1-1 draw with Inter Milan back in November 2003.
