Minna, the Niger State capital, on Tuesday recorded its first rainfall for the year, the News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] reports.
Residents are already upbeat, saying that the rain would reduce the intense heat witnessed of recent in the area.
Usman Zarumai, a resident of Maitumbi in Bosso Local Government Area said the early rain was “a clear indication of good things to come.”
He said that the early rain was also “an alert” for farmers to quickly clear their farms in preparation for planting.
Zarumai also said the rain was “a notice to government to hasten preparations for procurement and supply of fertilizer and other inputs to farmers.”
Another resident, Musa Aliyu advised farmers not to wait, but rush to begin preparations for planting in view of recent predictions on the rain pattern this year.
”We have been experiencing very hot weather for some days now and for long we have been expecting that it will rain.
”This is a clear indication of good things to come, because the downpour will settle the dust and will also reduce the heat.”
Abubakar Abdullahi of Sauka Kahuta said that the early rain would boost farmers morale.
He appealed to the Niger State Government to support farmers in the state, to ensure good harvest.
”Providing farming implements at government-controlled price will motivate youths to venture into agriculture, thereby, reducing unemployment,” Abdullahi said
