The number of confirmed monkeypox cases has topped 10,000 in the United States.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 10,768 monkeypox cases had been confirmed in the country as of Thursday ── the highest figure in the world.

Infections have been spreading in the US since the first case of monkeypox was confirmed in May. The US government declared a public health emergency on August 4 and is taking steps to ensure more people are vaccinated against the disease.

However, some people have been unable to get inoculated, due to a vaccine shortage.

To respond to the situation, the US Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday authorized the use of smaller doses through intradermal injections as an emergency measure.

The FDA says the results of a clinical study show that administering the vaccine between the layers of the skin produces a similar immune response to the conventional method of injection.
