The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has berated the Federal Government for deciding to mobilize only about 25% of thousands of students graduating in the various higher institutions for the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps.

In a press release by the President of NANS, Comrade Chinonso Obasi on Sunday, he said that the graduating students from higher institutions that would not be mobilized would be rendered idle for one whole year while remaining unemployable (where vacancies may exist) due to inability to produce their NYSC certificates.

“More importantly, the Federal Government should hasten the implementation of the abolition of the dichotomy which has existed ingloriously between HND and the BSC holders. The discrimination that has existed over years is seriously bringing setback into our education sector since what is good for goose is also deemed good for the gander. Obasi said.

“We seriously admonish the government to look into these two issues as a matter of urgency in order to salvage our education system and bring back equity and sanity back to the civil service.

“Government should endeavour not to expose Nigerian Students to unnecessary hardship, as there is urgent need to set the economy back on the path of recovery.

He also condemned the invasion and subsequent arrests of Federal Judges by the DSS personnel as it does not paint the image of the country in good light.

“It is at best an overreach on another arm of government. This is regarded as a clear case of arbitrariness that is capable of eroding the democratic tenets that was encapsulated in the doctrine of separation of power. Obasi said.
