Nine persons have been feared dead as gunmen reportedly stormed and attacked two communities of Rivers state. The communities are Taaba and Okwali communities in Khana Local Government Area (LGA).

The suspected cult attack, which took place between Tuesday night through the early hours of Wednesday, also led to the razing of several residences in the communities.

A source close to the communities, who opted for anonymity, said the gunmen, invaded Okwale community about 8pm, killing five persons while another set of assailants attacked and killed four in Taaba community on Wednesday morning.

“The attackers raided Okwali community on Tuesday evening, shooting sporadically at their targets. They killed about five people. They also burnt many houses.

“This morning, they also attacked Taaba community, neighbouring community to Okwali, shooting and killing about four persons too.

Spokesman of the Police command Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the attacks. He assured that security has been beefed up in the communities to restore normalcy.

But he however could not confirm the number of casualties as at the time of filing the report.
