United Nations under the aegis of United Nations Development Assistance Framework(UNDAF) is partnering 0yo State Government for the continued socio-economic development of the state for the period of 2014 to 2017.
For the successful implementation of the work plan valued at about $3 million, the United Nations was expected to make a financial contribution of about $1.7 million while the state government is also expected to make available about $1.3 million.
While signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Governor’s Office on Tuesday, Governor Abiola Ajimobi observed that it was gratifying to note that the state was one of the states selected by the United Nations to benefit from the framework which according to him, was designed to strengthen the capacities of the state government for sustainable socio-economic development.
He noted that their collective support to his administration would greatly contribute to the realization of his tripod of development of the state which included restoration, transformation and repositioning.
The governor maintained that his administration could not do it alone, hence the need for collaboration with the development partners, external funding agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other notable organizations in the task of making life more comfortable for the citizenry.
Ajimobi recalled that his administration in the last four years has embarked on extensive infrastructural development to make major cities and towns in the state to be physically functional and to lay a solid foundation for continued socio-economic development of the state.
He, however, assured the visiting partners of his administration’s commitment to provide all resources required to sustain the dynamic relationship, while soliciting the support of the UN for more support from their various agencies, especially in the area of consulting in respect of some proposed programmes which have not received approved counterpart funding by the relevant UN agencies.
The governor, then stressed that the signing of the 2015 Annual Work Plan would mark the beginning of a sustained and beneficial cooperation between the his government and the UN.
In his remark, the resident/humanitarian coordinator of the MoU, Daouda Toure said said the arrangement would give the state government an opportunity to receive support from all UN agencies and for the UN to offer relevant and effective response to the state needs and priorities.
Earlier in his address of welcome, the state’s Head of Service, Adesoji Eniade explained that the work plan of the signed agreement is focused on good governance, social capital development, sustainable economic growth, human security and risk management.
Eniade then stated that the external support was therefore a key compliment of the state’s effort towards achieving her transformation agenda, with the vision of to make the state a place where people can be the best they could be, adding that with the current population growth rate of 3.2 percent and the dwindling resources, it was evident the government alone could not cope with the burden of provision of essential amenities.
He thanked the officials of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for selecting the state as one of the beneficiaries of the programme, saying the underlying causes of the underdevelopment in the country had been traced to poor governance arising from control over a narrow but lucrative revenue base derived from oil and gas.
