The Anambra Police Command has banned the use of fireworks popularly known as knock-out in the state.
Benjamin Wordu, the Onitsha Area Commander of the command, told newsmen that it had also banned commercial motorcycles beyond 7 p.m. in the state, especially in Onitsha.
Wordu announced the measures on Tuesday after a security meeting with stakeholders and senior officers of other security agencies in Onitsha.
He noted that the measure was to maintain adequate security of lives and property especially during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
He said the police would initiate measures to arrest and prosecute violators of the ban on the use of fireworks.
“Anybody caught shall be disciplined appropriately. We will also embark on joint patrols in all parts of Onitsha to provide security to the people who will be coming into Onitsha during and after the Christmas,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Anambra State Park Owners Association, Albert Ibekwe, urged the police and other security agencies to initiate a stop-and-search in the commercial city.
“This will curb the menace of armed robbers who operate on commercial motorcycles,” Ibekwe said.
