The police in Osun on Friday said they have uncovered plots by some persons to cause mayhem and disrupt the peace of the state.

The police made this known at the end of the state’s Security Council meeting in Osogbo.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police in the state, Jesubiyi Taiwo, who stood in for the state’s police commissioner, Abubakar Marafa, said security agencies in the state were prepared to deal with anyone who attempts to breach the peace.

The security council of the state is made up of the police, State Security Service, SSS, the Nigeria Army, the Nigeria Air Force, the Customs, the Prisons Services, Immigration, the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

Osun State is currently embroiled in agitation by civil servants for payment of over seven months salary arrears, with groups calling on the governor, Rauf Aregbesola, to resign.

Taiwo said, “It has come to the notice of the State of Osun Security Council that some persons have been threatening to make the state ungovernable.

“This is a clear declaration of intent to perpetrate mayhem and breakdown of law and order.

“As the agencies of government constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives, property and liberty of the‎ citizens, we view this with every seriousness it deserves and will not fold our arms and allow the state to slide into chaos.

“We are unwavering in our resolve to perform our constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order.

“We will bring all means within our disposal to deter criminals and outlaws who may want to threaten the peace.”

The council also warned against indiscriminate use of sirens and the flouting of traffic rules, saying the police was prepared to deal with defaulters.

According to Taiwo, residents should go about their lawful duties without fear, adding that the security agencies are capable and resolute in the discharge of their duties.
