Jimi Agbaje, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State has identified self-serving politics as destructive and the major obstacle to Nigeria’s development.

The PDP candidate warned that until politicians and others in public service change their approach, Nigeria may never experience real growth.

He made this assertion at a debate conducted by The Platform for governorship candidates across political parties in Lagos State.

Agbaje who has remained a consistent critic of self-centred politics for many years now, believes that Nigeria can only get better if politicians rededicate themselves to the high ideals of service of fellow men.

According to him, Lagos State unfortunately, is the centre of this unhelpful egotistic politics which has done severe damage to the state and its people. But he has promised to reverse the ugly trend once he is voted into office.

“The real issue in this part of our world is this problem of politics for self. As a people, we must distinguish between power for self and power for service.

“We know those in power for self and they make no pretensions about it. For us, we are in politics to change this reality that has done us more harm than good.

“Therefore as politicians, we must all stand against this growing trend. Those interested in politics or service of any kind must purge themselves of this tendency. It is only in serving others that we are remembered, not only by men but also by the Almighty”.
