The Sultan of Sokoto and President, Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced the commencement of Ramadan with effect from Monday.
The Sultan made the announcement on Sunday night after the moon was sighted in parts of Katsina and Zamfara State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The announcement in Nigeria is coming hours after Saudi Arabia announced the sighting of the moon and the commencement of fasting from Monday.
The Royal Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had announced Monday, June 6 as the first month of Ramadan.
In a statement, the Royal Court said the Supreme Court made made the decision after validating reports of sightings of the Ramadan crescent moon.
More than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world will mark the month of Ramadan, during which believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having marital relations from dawn until sunset.
Ramadan is sacred to Muslims because it was during this month that the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Ramadan is the holy Islamic month when a 30-day fasting is observed.
