Some 75,000 children in north-eastern Nigeria risk dying of hunger in “the few months ahead”, the UN says.

UN humanitarian co-ordinator Peter Lundberg said that overall 14 million people needed humanitarian assistance in a region that was the former stronghold of Boko Haram militants.

He warned that the UN did not have enough funds to avert the crisis.
Boko Haram jihadists laid waste to the region before being pushed back by Nigerian forces in recent months.

“Currently our assessment is that 14 million people are identified as in need of humanitarian assistance” by 2017, Lundberg said in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on Tuesday.

He added that this figure included some 400,000 children, and that 75,000 of them “are going to die in the few months ahead of us… if we don’t do something rapidly and seriously”.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than two million displaced since Boko Haram began its military operations in 2009 in the Borno state and other areas.

As a way of reconciliation and display of loyalty to the new Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the sons of late Emir of Kano and the Emirate council have paid homage to the new emir at government house where he received appointment letter.

This is just as the state governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, refuted a purported allegation that the name of appointed emir was not in the name of nominees submitted saying Malarm Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was number one on the list.

The new Emir made his first public appearance at the Government House with members of the Emirate Council, Districts Heads, including sons of the late Emir Ado Abdullahi Bayero paying homage to him.

In his maiden interview with newsmen at the. Government House shortly before the presentation of his letter of appointment by Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, Sanusi promised to carry everybody along.

According to him, “I urge Kano people to always have the fear of God in all their undertakings so that peace and harmony would continue to reign in the state.”

His Highness also called for unity amongst the Emirate Council and the people of Kano, pointing out that he had no bitter acrimony against the losers because in a contest, “there is a winner and a loser.”

He further stated that the late Emir was his father and he grew up under his tutelage, “Let me tell you that, I am married to the first daughter of the late Emir which is my first wife at home and more so, the Turaki Kano, Nasiru Ado Bayero is my bosom brother. We slept together for about 10 years and at this time, why should we go against the same family’’

He also promised to be fair and just in carrying out his responsibilities as the father of all, “there is a winner and loser, so the looser should take the outcome of the result in good faith because power is given by God’’

He however, condoled with the family of the late Emir with the promise to continue with his good work.

Responding, the Wambai Kano who is the Senior Councilor of the Kano Emirate Council, Abbas Sunusi expressed happiness over the appointment of the new Emir.
