After 110 days of strike, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has said that polytechnic lecturers will not return to their classrooms until the union’s demands are met by the Federal Government.

ASUP made this declaration yesterday after a National Executive Council meeting of the union in Abuja.

The ASUP President, Dr. Chibuzor Asomugha said: “The entire country is worried about the situation. But the Government does not seem to care. The ASUP-NEC has rejected the government’s offer to pay the arrears owed us since 2009, if we call off the strike.

“There is no seriousness on the part of the Government to negotiate any of the issues. Before we suspended the strike in July 2013, Government picked four of the 13 issues from our 2009 agreement and said those issues would be handled in two weeks.

“These four issues include; release of the White paper on Visitation to Federal Polytechnics, the completion of the constitution of the governing councils for federal polytechnics, the migration of the lower cadre on CONTISS 15 salary scale, and the commencement of the Needs Assessment of Nigerian polytechnics.

“Union suspended the strike, and gave Government a one month time frame to resolve these issues. It was not until ASUP resumed its strike in January that the Federal Government commenced Needs Assessment and completed the constitution of the governing councils for federal polytechnics.”

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) on Wednesday expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s proposal to the union.

ASUP President Chibuzor Asomugha told newsmen in Lagos that the union would discuss it in two weeks’ time at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

Asomugha said that the union’s position on the government’s proposal would be known after its NEC meeting at a yet to be determined venue.

“We are not satisfied with what the government is proposing, in fact, we did not accept it at the meeting held with the minister on Tuesday in Abuja.

“Since that is what it can offer, we will convey it to our NEC, to decide the next action. We cannot say when we will suspend the strike until after the NEC meeting.

“I cannot say when, but as soon as the NEC meet, maybe in the next two weeks,’’ the ASUP president said.

The Supervising Minister for Education, Nyeson Wike, on Tuesday said the government had released N20.4 billion, to settle the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS) arrears to the polytechnic teachers.

Wike released the figure at a meeting with ASUP and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) in Abuja.

He said that the payment was delayed by the lack of agreement by both parties on the modalities for the payment.

According to him, the CONTISS salary structure being agitated for by the union has been approved and also included in the 2014 budget.
