An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has advised Nigerian Muslim students and their parents to avoid applying for admission into private universities owned by Christians pending the time the National Universities Commission (NUC) would sanitize them.

The group alleged that Christian proprietors of private universities are yet to purge themselves of tramadolised religiosity and deep-seated hatred for Muslims and their faith. This is manifested in the forceful conversion of Muslim students, compelling Muslim students to attend church service and disallowing female Muslim students from using hijab.

A statement issued on Thursday, 24th November 2022 by the group’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, accused Christian owners of private universities of gymnastic religiosity, religious intolerance, and identity theft.

The statement reads:

“We have a litany of reports coming from Muslim students in private universities owned by Christians concerning anti-Muslim practices and religious apartheid. Muslim students are not allowed to practice their faith in those private universities. They cannot form Muslim student associations.

“Worse still, they are not given any space where they can pray. Hijab is anathema in such institutions. Muslim students are forced to attend Christian service in the chapel where attendance registers are marked and absentees are sanctioned. These institutions have the poorest human rights records today. To Muslim parents and students, these institutions are comparable to torture chambers at least for the duration of their studentship.

“These actions amount to gymnastic religiosity, religious intolerance, and identity theft on the part of Christian owners of private universities. It is religious intolerance when Christian school authorities fail to provide a place for Muslim students to pray. It is acrobatic spirituality when Muslim students are forced to attend church. It is identity theft when Christian school owners disallow female Muslim students from wearing hijabs thereby making them look like Christians.

“This treatment is obnoxious, unlawful, illegal, illegitimate, and unconstitutional. It is an existential threat to the religion of Islam. It also constitutes indubitable proof of complete desertification of religious tolerance in the vocabulary of owners of Christian private universities.

“One way out of this quagmire is for Muslim students and their parents to make proper investigations before applying for admission into any private university. Those found to be owned by Christians should be avoided at all costs because they are nothing but spiritual traps set for Muslims to lose their identities.

“Christian proprietors do not possess that magnanimity, liberality, and broadmindedness to share what they have without attaching strings. They continue to assure us with their body language that Christian evangelism in Nigeria knows no decency, to them all is fair, particularly that which is foul.

“To them, Muslim students are not among those who should enjoy or exercise their Allah-given fundamental human rights. Human rights should be enjoyed by Christian students alone.

“We urge Muslim students and their parents to avoid Christian private universities pending the time that the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) will sanitize them or pending the time Christian owners of private universities would have eschewed religious bigotry or learned to live and let live.”

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has warned Nigerians to resist the temptation of asking to be returned to the era of the past characterised by corruption and ethnic conflicts.

In his remarks at the 2018 Democracy Day Interdenominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, Osinbajo said the current national challenges that were making some Nigerians to call for a return to the pre-2015 era were designed by God to strengthen them.

He explained that when God put individuals or nations on a journey to destiny, He did not tell them the challenges inherent in the trip, lest they would refuse to embark on it.

Quoting extensively from Exodus 14: 10 to 15, the Vice-President likened Nigeria’s current challenges to the children of Israel wilderness’ journey that was tough, difficult and fearful.

He said like some Israelites did at a point, Nigerians might be faced with the temptation of wondering why they were not left to remain in the captivity of the past.

Osinbajo said his message for Nigerians at such critical point in the nation’s history was for them to go forward and refuse to turn back because “the challenges they see today won’t be seen again.”

He said, “As it was with the journey of the Israelites, so it is in the journey of nation-building and development. Our nation is not different. We are on a journey from the past.

“There have been times where the journey is somewhat tough, difficult and even fearful.

“We looked behind us, we see the armies of the past: the armies of division which led to civil war where many of us died; the armies of religious strife that refused to leave us; the armies of corruption and graft; those who want us to remain in the captivity of ethnic and religious conflicts, these are the armies of the past.

“But ahead of us, we also see the Red Sea – bloody conflicts and the doom sayers saying the future will be worse than the past.

“And then the people say, ‘Why did you take us from where we were?’ The same people who cried in anguish to the Lord, now say, ‘You should have left us in the past, you should have left us; we didn’t know you were taking us out of captivity to kill us in the wilderness.’

“And like Moses, the leadership say, ‘What shall we do, oh Lord? We didn’t expect that this will be a journey to destruction.’ Then God said to Moses, God speaks to the leadership of Nigeria, ‘Why do you cry to me? Tell the children of Israel, tell the children of Nigeria, go forward, go forward, don’t turn back.’

“Moses, inspired by God, said to the children of Israel to go forward. He also said, ‘Do not be afraid, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians you see today, you shall see no more forever. He will fight for you and you shall hold your peace.’

“So, I say to you brethren in Christ and to you my fellow country men and women, let us go forward, let us not look back. The armies of the enemy that are today threatening to kill and maim and the colours of poverty and injustice, you shall see no more forever.

“God will fight for us and we shall hold our peace. We must move forward, we are a people of prophesy. God has said concerning this nation that he is building a nation where all men and all tribes and faith will dwell in love and peace, a nation where our people will have ample opportunities for productivity and reward. The promises of God are assured and certain.

“2 Corinthians 1:20 tells us that all the promises of God are yea and amen to the glory of God to us. All the promises of God to us are yes and amen in Jesus Christ for you and I.

“This is the future that we are heading and we are already going steadily, surely in that direction.”

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the Church had a role to play for the good of the nation to manifest. “The Church has a responsibility that Nigeria sees the light,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with Christians in Nigeria on the solemn occasion of the commencement of this year’s Lenten season.

“As they join their counterparts worldwide to emulate the worthy example of Jesus Christ who fasted 40 days at the beginning of His earthly ministry,” the President urged Christian brothers and sisters to pray fervently for the country’s unity and progress.

A statement by his senior special adviser, media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that President Buhari believes that Nigeria’s existence as one united country is a divine arrangement and nothing should be done to put it asunder.

President Buhari enjoined all Nigerians to intensify love, brotherliness and concern for the less privileged members of their communities in order to strengthen the bond of togetherness.

As Christians begin the period of increased prayers, piety, sacrifice and selfless services, the President wished them and all Nigerians well, Adesina said in the statement.

John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has called on Christians, to rise up and Christianise Nigeria instead of complaining that Muslims want to Islamise the nation.

Onaiyekan made the call in his homily at a Mass to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at Our Lady of Perpertual Help Parish, Gwarinpa II on Sunday in Abuja.

“So let nobody deceive you, I don’t think there is anybody who has plan to Islamise Nigeria, but even if they do, they have every right to do so.

“They have every right to do so provided they also know that I have the right to Christianise the whole of Nigeria.

“The answer is not in complaining and crying; stand up like a man and Christianise Nigeria,’’ the Cardinal said.

He said that Christians had the mandate to preach Jesus Christ to everyone without being distracted with material things.

Onaiyekan urged Christians to defend their faith by preaching the gospel in words and deeds without comprising the message of the Cross.

He said that the disciples of Christ preached the crucified Christ, accepted persecution and that many even died for their faith.

“People complain that Christianity is being persecuted; they are saying that some people want to Islamise the nation. Just know that nobody can’t Islamise you unless you agree to be Islamised.

“For as long as you are not ready to stand up and carry the Cross, you are on the verge of losing your faith; if you don’t want to lose your promotion for Christ sake, you are also not worthy to be a Christian.

“Anybody who presents another programme different from the programme of Jesus Christ on the Cross will lose, you will drop; you will just drop like an overripe apple.’’

According to him, Christians cannot achieve the feat by compromising their faith, it can only be achieved by carrying their cross and following Christ.

“You don’t Christianise the nation by standing up and looking for prosperity or material benefits.

“You Christianise a nation, if you are ready to stand up for the truth, preach the gospel, carry the Cross and follow the Lord Jesus.’’

Quoting from the Gospel of Mathew Chapter 10 verses 37 to 42, Onaiyekan said that anyone who loved his or her mother, father, children , husband more than Christ is not worthy of His kingdom.

He, however, said that the message of Cross is that of salvation, which was gradually being reduced to the message of prosperity, adding that it was natural to face suffering in the world.

The Cardinal said that Christianity had survived over 2,000 years and the religion became more established even when the apostles faced persecution and were even killed.

“The apostles went through horrible suffering because of that, the Church took root when everybody thought it was the end of the story of Jesus, who died on the Cross.

“That is the mystery of Christianity, if it is not God’s own doing, Christianity would not have survived,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Onaiyekan administered sacrament of confirmation to 63 Catholics in the parish and also laid a foundation of the 2,000 capacity new church.

According to Catholic teaching, the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.

For by the sacrament of Confirmation, (the baptised) are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with special strength of the Holy Spirit.

Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the Christian faith by words and deeds.

Also, 30 candidates received first Holy Communion at the Mass.

I am deeply grateful to all Nigerians – Muslims and Christians alike who have prayed and are continuing to pray for my good health.

This is a testimony that in spite of the hardship being experienced, Nigerians support the Government in its effort to tackle our country’s challenges.

The best way for me to repay you all is to re-dedicate myself to serving you, protecting your interests and keeping your trust. I thank you very much.

I am feeling much better now, there may, however, be need to have further follow-ups within some weeks.

Rather than sending delegation upon delegation to Abuja to welcome me, may I appeal to all Nigerians to continue to pray for our country’s unity, progress and prosperity.

I thank you very much and may God bless our Country!

World Muslim and Christian Elders converged on the ancient city of Cairo, Egypt to canvass for promotion of peace, understanding and tolerance among the adherents of the religions.

This was one of the main agenda of the two-day international conference of Al-Azhar’s and the Muslim Council of Elders entitled: Freedom, Cizenship,Diversity and Integration.

The conference was co -organised by other religious institutions from the east and the west, with a view to confronting the phenomenon of Islamophobia, caused by terrorism and acts of violence.

Declaring the conference open, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Prof. Ahmad El-Tayyeb called upon representatives of different religion to integrate and erase any tension among them in order to disseminate the true values and principles of religions.

He said that such values and principles usher in co-operation and acquaintance as well as discard violence and instil the concept of citizenship.

Tayyeb used the opportunity to disabuse the minds of the parcipants on the negative tags on Islam, saying it was as a result of lack of true understanding of the true teachings of the religion. “It is sad and painful to depict religion as a tool that damages innocent bodies”, the Islamic scholar said.

The Grand Imam, however, highlighted the various role of the religious leaders and thinkers geared towards erasing the negative mindsets against Islam.

He bemoaned the epidemic of Islamophobia and terrorism that has harmed Muslim cizens in western countries and the image of Islam globally.

Tayyeb warned that if religious institutions in the east and the west did not work on confronting islamophobia, the phenomenon might extend to Chrisanity and Judaism in the future.

Speaking in the same vein, His Holiness Pope Tawadros ll, Pope of Alexandria and the Patriarch of the Holy See, said that extremist ideology and terrorism could be cured through enlightened ideas.

He added that Egypt and the region are still suffering from extremist ideology coming from false understanding of religion. Such misunderstanding, the Pope stressed, have led to terrorism and extremism, which are two of the largest challenges to co-existence.

Pope Tawadros attributed extremism and violence to the existing unilateral culture based on the oneness of opinion.” One of the reasons for extremism and fanatism is ignorance of the other”, he said.

The Pope averred that the solution lies in offering religious values in an enlightened and modern way as well as confronting extremist ideology with enlightened thoughts.

In attendance at the conference witnessed by delegates from 50 countries, were the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Bishop Nicholas Baalbaki, Patriarch of Anoch and All the East for Roman Orthodox of St. Mark, among other top Muslim and Chrisan scholars.

Nigeria Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar and Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh Sheri), Grant Mufti of Nigeria, were represented at the conference.

“Gospel of Barnabas – a disciple of Christ – which shows that Jesus was not crucified, nor was he the son of God, but a Prophet”

Much to the dismay of the Vatican, an approx. 1500-2000 year old bible found in Turkey, in the Ethnography Museum of Ankara, has revealed that Jesus Christ was never crucified as most christians are made to believe.

Discovered and kept secret in the year 2000, the book contains the Gospel of Barnabas – a disciple of Christ – which shows that Jesus was not crucified, nor was he the son of God, but a Prophet. The book also calls Apostle Paul “The Impostor”. The book also claims that Jesus ascended to heaven alive, and that Judas Iscariot was crucified in his place.

A report by The National Turk says that the Bible was seized from a gang of smugglers in a Mediterranean-area operation. The report states the gang was charged with smuggling antiquities, illegal excavations, and the possession of explosives. The books itself is valued as high as 40 Million Turkish Liras (approx. 28 mil. Dollars). Man, where is the Thieves Guild, when you need them?

Authenticity
According to reports, experts and religious authorities in Tehram insist that the book is original. The book itself is written with gold lettering, onto loosely-tied leather in Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ. The text maintains a vision similar to Islam, contradicting the New Testament’s teachings of Christianity. Jesus also foresees the coming of the Prophet Muhammad, who would found Islam 700 years later.

It is believed that, during the Council of Nicea, the Catholic Church hand-picked the gospels that form the Bible as we know it today; omitting the Gospel of Barnabas (among many others) in favour of the four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Many biblical texts have begun to surface over time, including those of the Dead Sea and Gnostic Gospels; but this book especially, seems to worry the Vatican.

The Catholic Church wants in
What does this mean to Christian-derived religions and their followers? Quite a tight spot. The Vatican has asked Turkish authorities to let them examine the contents of the bookwithin the Church. Now that the book has been found, will they come to accept the it and its evidence? Will they deny it altogether? Call it a “Muslim lie”, as did the “Truth” Magazine, in 2000?

To many, this book is a beacon of hope, that believers soon realize that the object of their adoration is arbitrary; and that all text, especially religious text, is subject to interpretation.

What does this mean to atheists/agnostics/secular thinkers? Is the text real? Fake? Does it matter? Hopefully, this news inspires the religious to ask questions, instead of pointing fingers or believing anything blindly.

Please, don’t go poking fun or tossing around the “I told you so!”s. The biggest danger of faith is when people believe what they want to believe, defending against any and all evidence; especially when that evidence revolutionizes their foundation from the ground up. And the biggest culprit to that danger is the ego trap: rejecting/criticizing others, for being unlike you.

For centuries, the “defense” of blind faith has driven nations to war, violence, discrimination, slavery and to become the society of automatons that we are today; and for just as long, it has been justified with lies. If you know better, act like it.

The presidential candidate of the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday said he would work together with serving generals of the Nigerian military in order to evolve a plan that could defeat the violent sect, Boko Haram.

Muhammadu Buhari, in his Christmas message to Nigerian Christians signed by the Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dele Alake, said that Nigeria has no business being in spite of falling price of crude oil on the international market,

He said his administration would focus on how best to “make the condition of living of the common man the index for the assessment of our policies and not the amount of billionaires our administration would have made.”

Buhari felicitated with Christians in the country as they celebrated Christmas, assuring Nigerians that they would have better reasons to celebrate the festival if he is elected in 2015.

He said, “On my part, I intend to initiate consultations with serving generals and those who have served our country and distinguished themselves on the battlefield across the world to work out an alternative and effective strategy to crush this insurgency within the shortest possible time if elected president on February 14, 2015.

“I have said that I live the life of a pensioner. I share the burden and anxiety of majority of our poor, powerless people. I have offered myself on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, the party of change, because I desire to give back to a country that clothed, fed and trained me to be what I am today. Our people are poor. But our country is rich.”

The former Head of State, who berated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration over rising poverty in the country, said, “In a nation where a few individuals could raise N21bn because they wanted to make their friend President, millions of citizens, who truly own the resources being accumulated by a few, are left to suffer in sorrow, tears and blood.

Buhari said while many Nigerians travelling towards the eastern part of the country would encounter “the failed promises of the Second Niger Bridge;” those travelling through the South-West would “have to bear the gridlock on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”

He noted that millions of Nigerians would celebrate the Christmas season in poverty and misery because “the system of production and distribution of national resources has been rigged against the vast majority of our people.”

He said, “We promise that, by Christmas 2015, our administration would have brought out efficiency in management and allocation of public resources to make the inter-state roads smoother and easier to ride.

“Christmas is a season when we all embark on journeys to join our brothers and sisters in our native towns to hold town hall meetings, inaugurate community projects and exercise our cultural rights.

“This year’s celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ symbolises peace, love and togetherness to mankind. It reminds us, once again, of the exemplary life of Jesus Christ and the ordinary yet spectacular circumstances of His birth. His life enjoins all of us to follow his path by offering to sacrifice our selfish desires for the good of our country and mankind in general. This event, however, is taking place at a period of serious security challenges across the length and breadth of our dear country.

“The right to life, guaranteed by our constitution, is under savage assault. The stories of murder in the print and electronic media make you shiver to the bones. The daredevilry of the Godless Boko Haram, which penetrated battle lines in the North-East to commit suicidal blasts in the north central capital cities of Bauchi and Gombe, demonstrates the crucial need to review the military strategy of our defence forces.”

Buhari also promised to initiate policies that would ensure the empowerment of the masses, adding that his presidential ambition was borne out of the need to alleviate poverty and establish a system where the rule of law prevails.

He added, “Certainly, there will be changes in policies. We cannot continue to enslave our country to those who tell us that we are in economic crises because of loans.”

Former Head of State, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari( retd.), has decried the attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party to “demonise” the leaders of the All Progressives Congress as religious bigots.

Buhari who stated this on his Facebook wall, said that PDP’s action was unpatriotic, evil and beyond acceptable political rhetoric for it to foment religious disharmony among Nigerians.

While stressing that the APC never looked at Nigerians as Christians or Muslims, Buhari, who was also presidential candidate for the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, urged Nigerians to maintain strict vigilance against any attempt to subvert the peace and unity of the country.

He added that no matter the antics of the ruling party, “the PDP’s death-knell has sounded, and it will end, just as it began, in tragedy.”

The former military leader wrote on his Facebook wall, “The attempt by the PDP to foment religious disharmony among Nigerians is unpatriotic, evil and beyond acceptable political rhetoric.

“We in the APC never look at Nigerians as Christians or Muslims, southerners or northerners; because, the bad leadership we fight against, the corruption we strongly oppose and the widespread poverty we painfully lament affect all Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, religion or geography.

“The fact that a ruling party can resort to acting in ways detrimental to national security portrays a party on its last gasp of political relevance and ever willing to plunge Nigeria into sectarian chaos in order to conceal its crimes within the debris of a nation-wide anarchy.

“No matter how it tries, the PDP’s death-knell has sounded, and it will end, just as it began – in tragedy.nWe call on all Nigerian men and women to rise against this malicious misrepresentation and maintain strict vigilance against any attempt to subvert the peace and unity of this country,” he said.
