US president-elect Joe Biden has a foot fracture and will likely have to wear a medical boot, his team said Sunday after the 78-year-old was taken to the doctor because he had slipped while playing with his dog.

Biden, who will become the oldest US president upon his January swearing-in, suffered the injury Saturday with Major, one of his two German shepherds.

The president-elect’s personal physician Kevin O’Connor initially said x-rays had not uncovered any “obvious fracture”, but added that an additional CT scan would still be done.

That scan “confirmed hairline (small) fractures… in the mid-foot,” O’Connor said in a subsequent statement released by Biden’s office.

He added that the former vice president, who won election against Donald Trump in November, “will likely require a walking boot for several weeks”.

With both Biden and Trump in their 70s, age was an issue in the presidential race, even if it often took a backseat to pressing matters like the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trump’s health was briefly of intense concern when he caught Covid-19, but the president resumed campaigning after getting a series of treatments — including an experimental antibody cocktail.

Trump, a famously finicky germophobe, was the first president in over a century to not have a dog.

The Bidens fostered and then adopted Major in 2018, while Champ has been with the family since 2008.

Biden officials have said Major will become the first rescue dog to live in the White House.

A dog managed to open an airliner’s luggage hold during a flight from St Petersburg to Moscow, forcing the crew to conduct an emergency landing, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported Monday.

The dog, described as being “not large,” broke out of its kennel and “triggered activation” of the luggage hold’s door, causing the door to open several dozen centimetres and setting off an alarm, according to the report.

The Boeing 737 was at an altitude of about 4,000 metres on its descent to Moscow, the report said.

Luckily for the dog, it “did not crawl out and remained alive,” a source at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport was quoted as saying

A dog died saving dozens of people at a wedding party in Maiduguri after it attacked a suicide bomber, an official said.
The dog stopped the teenage suicide bomber from detonating her explosives in the crowd.

The dog, according to the police, belonged to a resident of the neighbourhood where the wedding took place.

The suicide bomber was about making her way into the gathering at the wedding ceremony before the dog pounced on her.

The girl, whose original mission appeared to have been thwarted, detonated her explosive while battling to wriggle herself from the canine grip of the dog.

The gallant dog paid the supreme sacrifice as it died alongside the suicide bomber.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Borno State, Victor Isuku, said the incident happened at about 7.30 a.m. in Belbelo community of Jere Local Government Area in Borno State.

“Information just received indicate that today at about 0733hours (7.33am), a female suicide bomber with IED strapped to her body, attempted to infiltrate a wedding ceremony gathering in Belbelo community of Jere LGA”, he said.

“She was however prevented by a watch dog, so she had to detonate the IED to kill herself and the dog.

“The dog was owned by resident in the locality”, said Isuku, a deputy superintendent of police.

Although the police did not state if the dog was trained in bomb detection, it is not common in Nigeria for dogs owned by civilians to be so trained.

Isuku said normalcy has since been restored in the area and “no further casualty was recorded apart from the dog.”

The incident occurred few hours after three suicide bombers blew themselves up at two different locations not far away from the spot where the wedding took place.

About 100,000 people have been killed in Borno and neighbouring states since 2009 when the Boko Haram insurgency started.

Dogs can experience premature graying on their fur as a result of too much stress, just like some humans do, a new study has found.

Researchers in Colorado collected a sample of 400 dark-colored dogs aged 1-4. Each was photographed and the grayness of their muzzle was rated on a scale of “no gray’’ to “full gray.”

Meanwhile, dog owners were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their animal’s behaviour and health.

The result, published recently in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, was described as “quite striking.”

It showed that dogs with higher levels of anxiety and impulsivity seemed to have a greater extent of gray hair, especially those described as being fearful of loud noises, and unfamiliar animals and humans.

For dogs under the age of 4, a gray muzzle could be a warning sign of anxiety or other fear-related conditions, researchers said.

Meanwhile, female dogs are more likely to grow gray hair than males, the study showed.

In what has been described as the most expensive dog sale ever, a Tibetan mastiff puppy has been sold in China for almost $2million, a report said on Wednesday.

A property developer paid 12 million yuan ($1.9 million) for the one-year-old golden-haired mastiff at a “luxury pet” fair on Tuesday, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

“They have lion’s blood and are top-of-the-range mastiff studs,” the dog’s breeder Zhang Gengyun was quoted as saying adding that another red-haired canine had sold for six million yuan (about a million dollars).

Enormous and sometimes ferocious, with round manes lending them a passing resemblance to lions, Tibetan mastiffs have become a prized status symbol among China’s wealthy, sending prices skyrocketing.

The golden-haired animal is 80 centimetres (31 inches) tall, and weighed 90 kilogrammes (nearly 200 pounds), Zhang said, adding that he was sad to sell the animals.

“Pure Tibetan mastiffs are very rare, just like our nationally treasured pandas, so the prices are so high,” he said.

One red mastiff named “Big Splash” reportedly sold for 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) in 2011, in the most expensive dog sale then recorded.

The buyer at the Zhejiang expo was said to be a 56-year-old property developer from Qingdao who hopes to breed dogs himself, according to the report.

The report quoted the owner of a mastiff breeding Website as saying that last year one animal sold for 27 million yuan at a fair in Beijing.

But an industry insider surnamed Xu said that the high prices may be the result of insider agreements among breeders to boost their dogs’ worth.

“A lot of the sky-high priced deals are just breeders hyping each other up, and no money actually changes hands,” Xu said.

Owners say the mastiffs, descendants of dogs used for hunting by nomadic tribes in central Asia and Tibet, are fiercely loyal and protective.
