While praying for the repose of the souls of those killed, the Governor ordered immediate and free medical care for those who sustained injuries in the attacks.

A statement by Abdullahi Bego, the state Director of Press Affairs said that treatment has commenced for injured victims at the Sani Abatcha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu while three of the 11 injured victims have been referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala Kano for further medical care at government expense.

The governor condemned the Damaturu attacks as cowardly and barbaric and expressed confidence that despite “these barbaric and unjustified suicide attacks, the Boko Haram insurgency will come to an end soon in view of the all-hands-on-deck approach adopted by the Federal Government.”

The Governor commends security agents on the ground in Yobe State for their effort in the general security improvement in the State and urged them to step up surveillance effort to prevent insurgents and criminals from conducting further attacks.

Governor Gaidam also urges Yobe residents not to relent in their exemplary support to and cooperation with security agents and calls on them to continue to pray to Almighty Allah (SWT) for the full restoration of peace and security.

The holiday was communicated in a statement by the Special Adviser to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam on Press Affairs and Information, Mallam Abdullah Bego, on Wednesday.

Bego said the holiday was to enable workers across the state to collect their PVC from the Independent National Electoral Commission in their respective areas.

He added, “His Excellency, the governor urges all workers and people across the state, who have not yet collected their PVC, to use the period to collect their cards as a step towards exercising their civic duty to vote during the forthcoming elections.”

He however said banks and other financial institutions operating in the state could open their doors for business during the two days.

The governor has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the town, while praising the military and security agencies for their gallantry in the battle against the insurgents, some of whom are still believed to be hiding in the capital town.

The curfew on Damaturu has made it impossible for people to travel outside Maiduguri, the capital of yet another troubled state, Borno, as the Yobe capital has remained the only route in and out of the birthplace of the deadly sect.

A statement by Mallam Abdullahi Bego, the Special Adviser on Press Affairs and Information to the Yobe state governor, e-mailed to journalists covering the state on Tuesday, stated that the governor has approved the imposition of a 24-hour curfew in Damaturu, the State Capital.

The statement, which stated that the curfew is effective immediately, advised all residents of the town to remain in their homes until the curfew is relaxed.

Bego said in the statement that the “decision is taken in consultation with heads of law enforcement agencies in the State as part of measures to enable the security agents, who did a great job yesterday of repelling insurgent attacks on the town, to conclude their ongoing assignment.”

“His Excellency Governor Gaidam has expressed his appreciation to the residents of the State Capital, and to people all across the State, for their support and cooperation with security agents,” while urging the “people to continue to support the security efforts and to pray to Almighty Allah (SWT) for the return of peace and security.”
