World MMM founder, a Russian company that ran one of the world’s largest Ponzi scheme, Sergei Mavrodi is dead.

According to Russian state news agency, the 62-year-old, died of heart attack in Moscow.

Reports said he was rushed to the hospital late on March 25 with pain in his chest and died several hours later in Moscow.

“The emergency team has failed to save his life. He died this morning,” Russia Media reports.

Mavrodi’s MMM financial pyramid was a typical Ponzi scheme in which earlier investors receive their profits from subsequent investors. Mavrodi promised returns of 20 percent to 75 percent a month, as well as lotteries and bonuses for investors.

According to various estimates, the number of victims of the MMM was about 10-15 million people in China, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Nigeria.

In 1994, Mavrodi became a member of the Russian parliament a decision he later said was to ensure he received immunity from prosecution and was stripped of his mandate in 1996.
In 2007, a Moscow court found him guilty of financial fraud and sentenced him to 4 1/2 years in a penal colony.

In 2015, the Ponzi scheme MMM, started in Nigeria when it launched a new website for Nigerian audience.

In Nigeria, the company decided to lower the standards and promised profit was 30% per month.

The number of people that signed up in Nigeria as at 2016 was about 2.4 million. They hoped that MMM would give them easy money and they had no doubts.

Unfortunately, after a year, MMM announced the freezing of all members’ accounts.

Former Mauritanian President, Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, died on Friday of heart attack, the presidency said in a statement.

Mauritania announced a three-day mourning period.

Born in 1953 in Nouakchott, Vall was the president of Mauritania from 2005 to 2007.

In August 2005, a coup forced President Maaouya Ould Taya out of power and Vall became the leader of the ruling Military Council for Justice and Democracy.

Afterwards, Vall and the council introduced constitutional reforms and staged parliamentary and local elections which appeared free of fraud.

Until the coup, Vall was a close confidante of the toppled president and was made head of the security forces in 1987.

He was instrumental to the success of the 1984 military coup that brought Taya to power.

He contested for office again in 2009 and lost to current President Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz, to join the forces of the opposition.

There have been fresh calls for restrictions on the sale of the painkiller ibuprofen after another study found it heightens the risk of cardiac arrest.

Taking the over-the-counter drug was associated with a 31 per cent increased risk, Danish researchers have found.

Other medicines from the same group of painkillers, known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, presented an even higher risk, according to the findings published Wednesday in the European Heart Journal.

Diclofenac, available over the counter in the UK until 2015 and still taken on prescription, raised the risk by 50 per cent.

Lead researcher, Prof. Gunnar Gislason of the University of Copenhagen, called for tighter controls on the sale of ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

He said: “Allowing these drugs to be purchased without a prescription, and without any advice or restrictions, sends a message to the public that they (drugs) must be safe.

“The findings are a stark reminder that NSAIDs are not harmless. Diclofenac and ibuprofen, both commonly used drugs, were associated with significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest.”

The findings are the latest to raise alarm about the use of NSAIDs.

Last September, a study in British Medical Journal found the drugs were linked to an increased risk of heart failure.

Previous studies have linked the drugs to abnormal heart rhythm – which can cause heart failure – and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke if taken regularly.

Gislason urged people with heart problems to avoid ibuprofen and other NSAIDs. “NSAIDs should be used with caution and for a valid indication. They should probably be avoided in patients with cardiovascular disease or many cardiovascular risk factors,” he said.

“I don’t think these drugs should be sold in supermarkets or petrol stations where there is no professional advice on how to use them.”

Gislason suggested they should only be taken after consulting a doctor. “Over-the-counter NSAIDs should only be available at pharmacies, in limited quantities and in low doses,” he said.

He added: “The current message being sent to the public about NSAIDs is wrong. If you can buy these drugs in a convenience store, then you probably think, ‘They must be safe for me.’

“Our study adds to the evidence about the adverse cardiovascular effects of NSAIDs and confirms that they should be taken seriously and used only after consulting a health care professional.”

The Danish investigators studied data on almost 29,000 patients who suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest recorded in Denmark between 2001 and 2010. They found that use of any NSAID raised the likelihood of cardiac arrest by 31%.

The researchers speculated that the results could be explained by the effect of the drugs on the cardiovascular system, as they influence platelet aggregation and the formation of blood clots. They may also cause arteries to constrict, increase fluid retention and raise blood pressure.

Gislason said people should not take more than 1,200mg of ibuprofen in one day.

A rumour than Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has suffered a heart attack is a “grim lie”, his spokesman George Charamba said on Thursday.

The online news website Zim Eye (www.zimeye.net) published a letter on Tuesday saying the 91-year old leader Mugabe was “reported to have collapsed after suffering a heart attack while on holiday with his family”.

The letter, by an anonymous author who did not reveal the source of the information, said Mugabe was in a critical condition and his family had been told to expect the worst.

“This is the way the website seeks to improve its hits in order to get dirty money from Google. There is a financial incentive to the grim lie,” Charamba told Zimbabwe’s state-run newspaper The Herald.

“… You cannot doubt that there will be a story on the President’s alleged death every January.”

Reports about the declining health of Mugabe, the only leader Zimbabwe has known since independence in 1980, are relatively common, but Charamba normally declines to give an official response.

Mugabe likes to describe himself as “fit as a fiddle” but has shown signs of his advancing age in the last few years. He was caught on camera in 2015 tripping and falling down a short flight of stairs at Harare airport.

First vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, a powerful former security chief and for decades one of Mugabe’s closest aides, stands in line to succeed Mugabe in the event of his death.

A Pharmacist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Lanre Alege, said that no fewer than 12 million people die of stroke and heart attack every year around the globe.

Alege made the disclosure on Sunday at a lecture after the monthly keep fit exercise by the staff of UITH at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.

Quoting from the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics, Alege said that stroke was higher among men than women.

Stroke is a medical condition that occurs suddenly when part of the brain is damaged, either as a result of lack of blood supply (caused by blockages) or of rupture (bursting) of a blood vessel.

Alege, who was coordinates the keep fit exercise, said that stroke usually occurred without warning and had rendered many people totally or partially paralysed.

He listed some stroke risk factors as high blood pressure, cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, ageing, smoking and obesity.

Other factors, according to Alege are race, gender, medical history and lack of exercise.

He explained that the warning signs included sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, blurring of or dim vision on one eye and sudden severe headache.

The pharmacist also said sudden nausea or vomiting and sudden speech difficulty or slurred speech were signs of stroke, advising people to quickly seek medical attention if any of these signs were noticed.

Alege advised people to exercise regularly and avoiding consumption of cigarette alcohol.

He also advised that any ailment should be properly treated and that cholesterol in the system was within normal limits.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UITH, Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, charged members of staff of the hospital to take exercise regularly.

The CMD was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Yinka Buhari, who is also the Director of Clinical Affairs of the hospital.

He said that the institution would continue to encourage adequate participation in keep fit exercises.

Ademola Rasaq, former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun is dead. He was aged 53.

The Publicity Secretary of the party in Osun, Bola Ajao, who confirmed the death at the party secretariat in Osogbo said “the former chairman died in the early hours of today (Thursday) in Ibadan as a result of heart conditions.

“He developed heart complications at the break of dawn and was driven to University College Hospital, Ibadan, by Bayo ‘Ijebu’ his driver. It was at the UCH in Ibadan that he was confirmed dead,” Ajao said.

The publicity secretary said the party has lost a true leader, a grassroots politician who was ready to carry everybody along.

“The party has dispatched vehicles to Ibadan to convey the corpse of the late politician to Osun. We are discussing with the family to fine-tune where to bury him immediately and other issues, as he is a Muslim.’’

Staff of the PDP Secretariat in Osogbo were seen in groups discussing the incident while some were weeping.

Meanwhile, our correspondent observed that the filling stations owned by the late PDP chairman situated in Osogbo were under lock, while a condolence register had been opened at the entrance of the Osun PDP Secretariat.

Hon Adejare Bello, a PDP stalwart in Osun described the sudden death of the former PDP chair as shocking, adding that the deceased “played his part as chairman of our great party.’’
