An Osun State High Court sitting in Ede has ordered that Alfred Aderibigbe, the nurse who administered the drugs which allegedly killed Senator Isiaka Adeleke, be remanded in custody.

According to a statement on Sunday by the Press Officer, Osun State Ministry of Justice, Opeyemi Bello, the nurse, who was arraigned on murder before Justice Ayo Oyebiyi on Friday pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel for the accused, Soji Oyetayo, prayed the court to admit Aderibigbe to bail.
He told the court that there was an application submitted to the court for his client’s bail.

The Acting Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Dapo Adeniji, who led the legal team from the ministry, opposed the bail application, arguing that the accused was being arraigned for the first time in the court, while the bail application was filed before the arraignment.

He said, “The bail application is premature because the accused was not in custody when the application was filed.”

The presiding judge, Justice Ayo Oyebiyi, in his ruling ordered that the accused should be remanded at the Ilesa Prison till June 29, 2018 when the case would come up for hearing.

Adeleke, a serving senator, died on April 23, 2017, after he was treated by the nurse.

His death sparked a riot with the insinuation from his supporters that he was poisoned because of his governorship ambition.

The state government instituted a coroner’s inquest to probe the cause of the death and the nurse was indicted by a magistrate, Mr Olusegun Ayilara, who recommended him for trial.

The Chief Medical Director of the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Prof. Akeem Lasisi, who testified before the panel had said Adeleke died of drug overdose.

The Consultant Pathologist at LAUTH who carried out the autopsy on Adeleke’s corpse, Dr Taiwo Sholaja, also told the coroner’s inquest that Adeleke died of drug overdose and not poison.

Three Labour unions in Oyo State have directed workers in the state employment to stay away from their duty posts for three days, starting from Wednesday.

TheBay directive came in a statement jointly signed by Kofo Ogundeji, NLC State Secretary, Falegbe Mayowa, TUC State Secretary and Olabode Akinfenwa, JNC Assistant State Secretary.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports the unions were the NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

They said that the action was to call on the state government to address the 13-week-old strike of the state-owned tertiary institutions and 256 sacked workers of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

It is also in solidarity with complaints presented by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), 56 months accumulated unpaid pensions and gratuities of retired primary school teachers and a halt in workers’ promotion since 2010.

Waheed Olojede, the State NLC Chairman, who spoke alongside Emmanuel Ogundiran Chairman, JNC/TUC, said government had shown continued insensitivity to the plight of workers of the state’s tertiary institutions who were owed 17 months salaries.

Olojede asked the state government to rescind its decision on the sacked 256 LAUTECH Teaching Hospital workers, considering their hardship.

He added that the workers were directed to stay at home in solidarity with their affected colleagues.

Olojede urged that the state government to urgently attend to the grievances to avert further actions.

NAN reports that senior official of thestate government were in a meeting over the issue as at the time of filing the report.

The man who administered several injections on Osun senator, Isiaka Adekele, shortly before his death, Alfred Aderibigbe, has testified before the Coroner inquest into the lawmaker’s, saying he was only one of many nurses the politician had in Lagos and Abuja.

Giving evidence at the inquest on Thursday in Yoruba, Aderibgbe said Adeleke consulted him for the past 20 years on matters relating to his health.

He was led in evidence by his counsel, Lekan Alabi.

According to Aderibigbe, he first met Adeleke 20 years ago while working as a nurse at the State Hospital, Ede.

He said he had attended to Adeleke’s daughter who was rushed to the hospital under convulsive condition, adding that the senator then appreciated his effort with a cash gift.

Aderibgbe explained that after the incident, he visited the senator regularly on his instruction.

“After a while, I started treating him,” he said. “Whenever he was given prescription and he probably didn’t complete his treatment in Abuja, I would administer the remaining. He had other nurses in Abuja, and some in Lagos.

“I’m his nurse in Ede. I don’t know any of other nurses, but I know that whenever he was given injection by those nurses, he would show me in order to know the new area to inject him.

“He was hypertensive and he had gouty arthritis. I was close to him. I used to advise him to rest for him to be okay. He stopped smoking for a long time. He drank alcoholic drinks.”

The Chief Medical Director of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, LAUTECH, Prof. Wale Lasisi, had testified before the inquest on Monday, saying the information available to him indicated that Aderibigbe had no medical status, either as a doctor or as a nurse.

He also said Adeleke was injected with Analgin, an analgesic outlawed by the National Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, several years ago.

Aderibigbe’s testimony was deferred to Thursday following pleas by his counsel that he was emotionally unfit to stand in the witness box.
