The Lagos State government is set to introduce a reality TV programme tagged “Lagos Rescue” aimed at showcasing the efforts and strategies of the State Government’s emergency management agencies such as Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) and Lagos State Fire Service in tackling emergencies on Lagos Television.

According to the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kehinde Bamigbetan, Rescue, a one-hour programme, which will run on Sundays from 10.30p.m, is also meant to highlight the roles and responsibilities of the citizenry during emergencies for regular smooth operation.

Bamigbetan, who disclosed this Tuesday at a Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, said in a spirited effort to ensure that Lagosians live in peace, and also promote an accident-free society Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had approved the reality programme in view of the many benefits it offers the State, noting that this is in addition to the huge funds regularly allocated to the emergency management agencies to strengthen their capacity to manage an emergency.

In his words, “As a sensitive and responsive government, Lagos State strives to present real-life situations of emergency control and management to the public through Lagos State Television to make viewers know the huge efforts being put into managing hazardous circumstances. Everyone has a part to play in emergency rescue operations and the Reality TV show will enable viewers to identify their roles while watching the programme”.

“Lagos Rescue will also be focusing on the role of government establishments, rescue teams and members of the public in ensuring that every accident does not result in avoidable loss of lives of individuals involved in unforeseen emergency situations”, he added.

The Commissioner explained further that Consultants have been appointed to provide 24-hour coverage of the activities of the emergency management agencies. They are Pointclear Media Production which has been assigned to LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), BridgeWorld Communication to cover LASAMBUS and Legacy Film to record the Fire Service.

While noting that the media outfits are expected to work with officials of the agencies and provide 24-hour coverage to effectively document their activities in emergency management, he stressed that the media personnel will also accompany rescue teams on emergency management duties for the recording of activities involved in life-saving operations.

Bamigbetan pointed out that media personnel covering the emergency activities in the agencies were selected from a team of our private sector partners to allow a balanced reporting of events from different perspectives, saying that while we cannot avoid an emergency in the State, the Government remains committed to ensuring immediate and effective response to emergency situations.

He described Lagos Rescue as people-centric since it will present real-life experiences involving the state’s Emergency Rescue operations in order to achieve two major objectives of teaching viewers how first responders go about saving valuable lives of Lagosians and making them identify how they could have prevented casualties that result from such emergency situation.

The Commissioner, therefore, implored all Lagosians to watch the reality show on LTV every Sunday and provide valuable feedback through the various social media platforms of the Lagos State government.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday said the aggressive repositioning of the broadcast stations in the State was part of his administration’s strategy aimed at empowering the media outfits to compare favorably with the best in the world, pledging that the State would soon celebrate the birth of new broadcast machinery.

Governor Ambode, who spoke while declaring open the 65th General Assembly of the Broadcast Organisations of Nigeria (BON) held in Lagos, said his passion for the information platforms was very high, a development he said accounted for the massive investment aimed re-energizing the broadcast stations in the State.

He said that “As an administration, we are committed to re-energizing, re-positioning and re-engineering our broadcast stations by strengthening their operations with the provision of cutting-edge technology that will stand them out amongst their peers around the world.

“I must confess here that as a Governor, my passion for the information platforms is very high. This is because of my belief that the media and information machinery are the windows through which the world sees us and vice-versa,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who was represented by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, said in recent times, his administration provided the radio stations in the State with new transmitters and studios, while Lagos Television is currently undergoing a holistic overhauling of its non-digital equipment.

He added that the station had just taken delivery of six stream box avenirs that would enable it improve on electronic news gathering abilities, while a new HD Outside Broadcast Van would soon be delivered in the coming days.

“During my first anniversary broadcast, I made a commitment to turn around the three stations. I want to assure you that we are on course. As we hope to invite our friends from all over Nigeria to celebrate the birth of a new broadcast machinery in Lagos State.

“Lagos State Government is committed through our broadcast stations to deliver first class service to the people of the State as exemplified through the various projects being executed by this administration among which are road projects, the ‘Light Up Lagos’ Project and series of others.

“We are also committed to promoting the broadcast industry to an enviable height in the coming years. Our dream Media City project will be a one-stop media empire to be located in the heart of Ikeja that will be the pride of all,” the Governor said.

Governor Ambode, who also commended BON for its various initiatives, said he was delighted to be identified with the ideals of the broadcast industry which represents the bridge between the people and their elected representatives.

Earlier, in his remarks, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the broadcast media has a critical role to play in helping government to quell insurgency and militancy in some parts of the country, a development he said was part of reasons why government was putting so much efforts and resources in achieving a more developed broadcast industry as evident in the efforts toward the digital broadcasting switch over.

The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Ayotunde Adesugba, also charged the media to be at the vanguard of fighting all aspects of corruption at all levels by visibly setting agenda to fight graft, indiscipline and nepotism, among others.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday re-launched the Lagos Weekend Television (LWT) to provide 50 hours non-stop telecast, just as he charged the management of Lagos Television (LTV) to tap into technological advancement in the media industry to better serve the public and attain global standard.

The Governor, while unveiling the new LWT logo at the Combo Hall, LTV grounds, Agidingbi, also charged the operators to ride on the crest of technological development to enhance socio-economic development and empowerment of the people.

The unveiling of the rebirth of LWT revived the golden era of television broadcasting of the 80s.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tunji Bello, also urged the management of the media outfit to harness the benefits of the global knowledge and entertainment bank to drive the process.

While reiterating the belief of the present administration that the power of electronic broadcast particularly television should be properly harnessed for the day to day running of state affairs, Governor Ambode urged the management staff of the media house to air programmes that would engage the public and enhance economic development.

“We want to assure Lagosians that our government will not leave anything to chance in the quest to keep you at pace with information as they emanate.

“It is important to reiterate at this point that our government is very convinced about the need to constantly bring residents up to speed about what is new in terms of information communication between us and every stakeholder in the Lagos project.

“We believe that without effective information dissemination machinery like LTV/LWT, our people will be kept in the dark and when that happens, the public tend to misinterpret the lofty ideas of government, no matter how commendable they are”, the Governor said.

He paid glowing tribute to the First Executive Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande under whose administration the Lagos Television was conceived and delivered.

Governor Ambode also recalled very vividly as a young boy growing up in Lagos how the theme song of the LWT heralded the commencement of non-stop weekend entertainment for every household in an era when ownership of video playing equipment was not widespread.

Earlier in his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde reiterated the determination of the Ambode administration to reposition LTV as the station of first choice, assuring that the present administration would build on the vision of the pioneers of the station.

Ayorinde said:”The administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode sees Lagos Television beyond the pedestrian appreciation of a state-owned ‎TV station established to merely educate, inform and entertain.

“Rather, the administration sees the state broadcasting stations as veritable tools for social mobilization, reformation and re-orientation.

“They are thus part of the state apparatus for achieving the all-important desire of running an all-inclusive government that constantly engages the mass of the people so that we can all key into the vision of the government,” Ayorinde said.

The event attracted the first civilian Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, some members of the State Executive Council, notables from the broadcast industry and regulators including the Zonal Director, National Broadcasting Commission, Bunmi Cole and the Executive Secretary, Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, Segun Olaleye, among others.

A major shakeup has been effected in the broadcast stations owned by the Lagos State Government, Eko FM/Radio Lagos and the Lagos Television (LTV).

The shakeup involves at least 253 staff, who were redeployed to the state secretariat at Alausa, Ikeja, for absorption into the mainstream of government’s ministries.

Our correspondent learnt that 110 of the workers were affected in the two radio stations, Eko FM and Radio Lagos, while 143 were affected at LTV and are in both the junior and senior cadres, including some directors.

It was gathered that the exercise was to have been carried out during the administration of erstwhile Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, but Akinwunmi Ambode eventually executed it this week.

The affected senior staff were told to report to the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, where they will be screened to determine which of the ministries each one of them would fit in after checking though their academic qualifications, while the other category of staff will report to the PSO for proper deployment to other ministries.

One of the affected staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not in the position to comment on the exercise, disclosed that former Governor Fashola left the exercise for the new government who he said was magnanimous enough to give the exercise a human face.

“I understood that Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio Television Theatre and Art Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) which after extensive discussions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the state government for the exercise not to lead to outright sacking of the affected staff.

“This redeployment was a saving grace for us and I must commend Governor Ambode for this,” the source said.

Another source informed that the action of the government was a timely intervention to rescue Eko FM/Radio Lagos in particular from the financial crunch they are facing in recent time.

“It had been very hard to meet up financially of late and the little money we are getting could not sustain the staff strength. I think what the Governor did was the best to save the stations from collapsing. The redeployment will give the affected workers a new lease of life in the mainstream of civil service operations in the ministries at the seat of government at the secretariat, Alausa.”

It was gathered that all the affected staff who might have been properly re-absorbed would begin to receive their monthly salaries at their new ministries from next month.

Eko FM/Radio Lagos, it was gathered, has been given a new lease of life by Governor Ambode who released funds for the radio stations to purchase new broadcast equipment.

“New transmitter has been purchased for the stations. The operations of the stations have been automated now with modern technology so that they can compete favourably with their counterparts in the industry,” the source said.
