A wanted killer, Nnanyereugo Best a.k.a. Killaboi, who was declared wanted by the police for killing his girlfriend, Augusta Osedion, a student of Lead City University, has been arrested in Sierra Leone.

The suspect was said to have changed his name to Kanu Princeton Samuel and used $25,000 to purchase a Sierra Leonean passport.

He was, however, nabbed with other ladies at a night club in Free Town yesterday after his posted picture had gone viral on social media.

Killaboi had made the headlines in July when he took to the social media to confess murdering Augusta.

His arrest in Free Town, the Sierra Leone capital, was not without efforts from family members of the deceased model, including her brother and mother, Cordelia Okonye.

In an emotion-laden Facebook post on Saturday, Okonye narrated her role in getting Killaboi arrested at his hideout in Sierra Leone.

According to her, there were numerous pleas made to her daughter’s alleged killer to turn himself in, but he chose to ignore them.

Okonye said faced with that reality, she decided to send a passport photograph of him to all her relatives.

She said: “He blocked me after alleging I pimped my daughter out to men, which I never did. So what I did, I sent his passport photographs to all my relatives, friends, and family across the globe and told them he has a tattoo that identifies him.

“So along the line, my cousin in Sierra Leone was the first that hinted me that ‘I saw somebody like him. Immediately, my son and a cousin went to Sierra Leone.

“A day before my son and cousin got to Sierra Leone, they declared Killaboi wanted. He was already hiding in the country.

“The commissioner of police was contacted. Killaboi killed my daughter and left her corpse to rot before taking her phone.

On how Killaboi could travel outside the country’s shores after the murder, Okonye said he used fake names to secure a passport.

“Best killed my daughter on the 13th of July and got a Sierra Leonean passport on the 28th of July. He was eventually arrested yesterday (Thursday). One per cent of the pain is gone this morning that Benjamin is caught,” she said in a tone of triumph.

On his part, Augusta’s brother revealed that he had spent the past week in Freetown, Sierra Leone, coordinating with local law enforcement agencies to devise a strategy for capturing Killaboi.

He said: “They had been tracking him for some time, knowing his routines and movements, and their persistence led to his eventual apprehension at a nightclub.

“I’ve spent the last week in Freetown, Sierra Leone. We were in contact with the law enforcement agencies in Sierra Leone to set up ways to apprehend Ben.

“We knew where he slept, we knew where he ate, we trailed him until they were able to apprehend him last night.

“I’ve looked for him everywhere, from Accra to Abidjan, and luck brought him to my path in Freetown.

“Through the efforts of the Sierra Leonean authorities, we’ve finally been able to apprehend him. We hope the Nigerian Police Force work fast to extradite him to face his crimes.”

Augusta’s brother expressed his struggles in trying to do the right thing, acknowledging that he had done his part and was now entrusting the rest to the appropriate authorities.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has called on Nigerian youths to utilise the productive period of their lives, noting that while time waits for no one, obtaining a degree certificate does not always translate to success in life.

Osinbajo spoke at the 10th convocation of the Lead City University, Ibadan where 590 students were awarded first degree certificates in various disciplines on Thursday. Among them, 39 students graduated in the first class category.

Miss Mary Olukorede was adjudged the best graduating female while Amedu Anthony was announced as the best graduating male student.

At the event, the Chairman of Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Victor Osibodu, and the Chairman of Musoro Booksellers, Kolade Musoro, were also honoured with doctorate degrees.

Osinbajo, who was the special guest at the ceremony, said, “I was 60 years old in March this year, and I must confess that one of the greatest surprises I ever experienced was that I just suddenly became 60. I can clearly remember when I graduated from the university. I was 21 years old at the time. How time flies.

“One of the important lessons that you will learn is that time flies whether you are wasting it or you are using it well. It simply flies back. At the age of 60 years, I am entitled to give some advice.

“By talent, a good degree and coming from a very well-to-do family does not bring success and certainly it does not bring greatness. The most talented people, those who get the best degrees do not necessarily become the most successful in life.

“The difference between success and failure, mediocrity or excellence is character. Along with character is opportunity, perhaps the most crucial is the grace of God. Character is a set of values that shapes the conduct of an individual. It is a set of principles spoken and unspoken that a person observes and lives on.”

In his address, the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, who accompanied the Vice-President, said he was optimistic that the LCU would one day be ranked among the top 10 universities in Nigeria.

The Yoruba intelligentsia on the platform of The Yoruba Leadership and Peace Initiative (TYLPI) is to hold a crucial retreat, in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital to discuss the unity and progress of the race in Nigeria.

The scheduled retreat with participants drawn from all Southwest state and others, including Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and all parts of Nigeria and the Diaspora where yorubas are spread, will hold at the Conference Hall, Lead City University, Ibadan on Thursday.

According to a statement signed by Folu Olamiti, spokesman for the group, Yoruba leaders, captains of industries, those from the academia, students, market men and women, artisans and different brands of professionals had been invited to partake in the retreat.

The Retreat, the statement stressed, will focus essentially on ways and means of fostering the Unity of the Yoruba with intent to forge a common endeavour among the people in line with the aspirations of the race progenitors.

The statement said that with the outcome of the Retreat, TYLPI would be in a good stead to network with other similar groups and like minds to spearhead advocacy on promotion of good neighborliness among the Yoruba and the sound leadership which it said the south-west required to attain a new height in Nigeria.

It said TYLPI has always been inclined towards reviving Education which it noted has always given the Yoruba an edge as an ethnic group as well as promoting economic and cultural advancement of the people at all times.

It said participants at the Retreat would have the right opportunity to espouse ideas and suggestions meant to revive the fast dwindling Yoruba heritage through which it noted the Yoruba ethnic group for years, registered as the pace-setter for others in Nigeria.

TYLPI a non-partisan, non-political and non-religious group had before now had held series of meetings on its core aim and objective of forging a common endeavour among the Yoruba, while the idea of the Retreat scheduled for Thursday is part of efforts to widen its horizon both locally and internationally.

A 200 level student of Lead City University, Ibadan, Moshood Owolabi, is to die by hanging for stabling his fellow student to death.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte of an Ibadan High Court sentenced Owolabi to death by hanging for causing the death of one Seun Kolawole, two years ago.

Owolabi, of the Physical and Health Education Department caused the death of Kolawole by stabbing him with a bottle.

Gbolagunte said the counsel prosecuting the case, A. Olawale, a Deputy Director in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge said that the evidence before him showed that the accused committed the offence as charged.

He ruled that the accused should be sentenced to death by hanging to serve as deterrent to others.

Gbolagunte advised parents to always monitor their children to prevent them from misbehahing.

Olawale had earlier told court that the convict stabbed Kolawole with a broken bottle in the neck, following a misunderstanding between him and the deceased.

He said that the injury sustained as a result of the stabbing resulted to the death of Kolawole.

Olawale said that the incident happened on Jan. 12, 2014 at toll-gate area of Ibadan.

The offence is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38 Vol. II Law of Oyo State 2000.

The governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has urged graduating students in the nation’s higher institutions to be self-reliant and depend less on government and their guardians, even as they go into the world.

The governor who spoke at the 5th and 6th graduation programme of the Lead City university, Ibadan, said that the

According to him, the reality of a hostile world where white-collar jobs are non-existent dictates that graduating students should depend more on the works of their hands and less on society.

“The world is not all the time just, nor is it a bed of roses. Dear graduands, reliance on your parents and wards for sustainability would begin to thin out from now. Reliance would henceforth very much be on the works of your hands. You may have to draw largely from that ancient Yoruba aphorism which says, “Ise Loogun Ise: Work is the antidote to poverty,” the governor said.

While urging the private sector to partner with his government in the provision of quality education in the state, the governor said that developments have shown that no government can fund education alone.

“Recent developments in the growth of education have however shown that no government, no matter how benevolent it may be, can be rich enough to solely fund education. It must get the support of the private sector and individuals who are endowed.

“I therefore want to use this opportunity to appeal to individuals and corporate bodies who are yet to respond to the clarion call for support of education to join hands with this government in the effort to provide qualitative education for all,” he said.

Ajimobi said the state government, in its quest to continue the tradition of educational excellence of its forebears, decided to invest heavily in education.

“Our government has been committing a large chunk of its resources to education. We have a very rich history of educational development that no part of this country can rival.

“To ensure sustenance of this rich history that dates back to pre-independence era, our administration is striving for renewal of educational infrastructure, quality of teachers and ultimately, in students who can hold their own in any academic gathering,” Ajimobi said.

While itemizing the strides of his government in the field of education, governor Ajimobi said he was continuing in the tradition of ‘firsts’ of the Obafemi Awolowo government. “We are daily striving towards making our schools first among equals, in terms of infrastructure and quality of teachers. Our ratings in WAEC Examinations has improved considerably.

“We are partnering with the University of Ibadan to provide adequate monitoring of teaching quality and techniques in schools, expose teachers to modern method of imparting knowledge, with the aim of making our schools the best they can be,” the governor said.

In his speech, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Olufemi Onabajo urged the students to go into the world and excel, while thanking the state government for its urban renewal and infrastructural programme which he said the school had drawn greatly from.

“I want to use this medium to salute the doggedness, resoluteness, determination and commitment of the executive governor of the state, Senator Ajimobi to the transformation of Oyo State into a model worth emulating,” he said.

Highlight of the occasion was the award of honourary doctoral degrees on the governor, Professor Toyin Falola, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan, Dr. Abdouilie Janneh.
