The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has reiterated its commitment to abide by the output cut agreement of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies aimed at stabilizing the global oil market.

The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, stated this Wednesday while speaking at the ongoing virtual Gulf Intelligence “Global” UAE Energy Forum 2021.

Mallam Kyari noted that despite the negative effects of the production cut on government revenue, it was the best step towards redeeming the value of hydrocarbon resources at the global market in the interest of all.

Speaking on the topic, “Outlook for Africa/Nigeria’s Oil & Gas Sector in Post-Covid Era”, he said NNPC was hopeful that by the end of the year demand for crude oil would pick up and there would be a marginal increase in output, stressing that the Corporation was focusing more on gas, condensate and other revenue streams to tackle the revenue challenge arising from the OPEC+ production cut arrangement.

He explained that gas proved to be a steady and reliable revenue stream during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, adding that gas production and utilization would remain a key priority for the Corporation in 2021.

Earlier in his presentation, the Minister of Energy & Agriculture, United Arab Emirates (UAE), H.E. Eng. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, appealed to all oil producing nations not to flood the market with crude oil.

He said the UAE was at the moment more concerned about balancing the market forces of demand and supply in the global market than growing market share.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC and its investment partners, Shell, Total and ENI, have taken the Final Investment Decision (FID) to go ahead with the construction of Train 7 of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG).

Announcing the development Friday at the NLNG Headquarters Annex in Abuja, a visibly elated NNPC Group Managing Director, Mele Kyari, said it was a great day for Nigeria as the NLNG Train 7 project would rake $20bn revenue into the Federal coffers and create 10,000 direct and 40,000 indirect jobs.

He said the FID was a vote of confidence in the Nigerian economy as a prime investment destination by the International Oil Companies.

“It also signifies that there is a renewed confidence by our international investors, particularly our partners who we have known for a long time, to still agree to put money back into this country to move this project forward”, Kyari stated.

Describing the FID as a desire met, the GMD said it would help open a floodgate of opportunities for more of such investments which could boost the economy and create prosperity for the over 200million Nigerians who are the shareholders of the corporation.

“We need to do more, and we can do more. This FID has opened the gateway for doing more great things. We will work with our partners to bring in more projects that will add value to this country in the Upstream, and particularly in the gas processing sector”, he said.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support and expressed appreciation to the investment partners and the management of the NLNG for their tenacity in staying committed to the project in spite of all the challenges, adding that Mr. President’s earnest desire was to drive the NLNG to establish Train 12 as soon as possible.

Also speaking on the part of investors, the Managing Director of Shell who was represented by Henry Bristol, said Shell was committed to the project and the opportunities it provides for Nigeria.

On his part, the Managing Director of Total, Mike Sangster, said the company was very pleased to be part of the decision to proceed with the Train 7 which he described as great and fantastic.

The Managing Director of ENI who was represented by Peter Costello also expressed the commitment of his company for the decision to go ahead with the Train 7 project, adding that the decision was in tandem with the celebratory mood of the season.

It would be recalled that the GMD had, at various occasions in the year, committed to having the FID taken before the end of 2019.

The Train 7 would boost the production capacity of the current six-train NLNG by 35 per cent from 22Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) to 30MTPA and increase its competitiveness in the global LNG market.

NLNG is an incorporated Joint-Venture owned by four Shareholders, namely, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (49%), Shell Gas B.V. (25.6%), Total Gaz Electricite Holdings France (15%), and Eni International N.A. N.V. S.àr.l (10.4%).

Also present at the event were the Chairman of the Board of NLNG, Chief O. R. LongJohn, Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Attah, and the NLNG General Counsel/Company Secretary, Akachukwu Nwokedi.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, on Wednesday declared that the national oil company was not in contest for market share with the forthcoming Dangote Refinery but rather providing support to the promoters of the project to boost in-country refining capacity.

Speaking while receiving the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, at the NNPC Towers, Kyari explained that as the chief enabler of the Nigerian economy, the NNPC had a duty to rally industry players like Dangote Group to achieve the long held target of making Nigeria a net exporter of petroleum products.

The NNPC GMD assured that the same level of support would be provided to other promoters of refineries, noting that the ultimate goal was to enhance in-country production to the point of self-sufficiency and ultimately for export.

Earlier in his presentation, Dangote emphasized that the business approach of the Dangote Refinery was to see NNPC as a collaborator rather than a competitor, noting that the refinery would rely heavily on the Corporation’s invaluable knowledge of the refining business in Nigeria to achieve its central objective.

Dangote aligned his company with the Federal Government’s aspiration to ensure adequate in-country refining capacity, stating that upon completion the refinery would dedicate 53 per cent of its projected 650,000 barrels per day refining capacity to the production of petrol.

“The most important thing for us is to see how we can partner with NNPC, it is not to see how we can compete with NNPC. We would like NNPC to be part of us and we also want to be part of NNPC. I think that is the only way we can achieve a win-win situation,” he said.

The 9th National Assembly will give priority to the passage of the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) in order to consolidate and reposition the oil and gas industry for the benefit of all Nigerians.

Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajiabiamila, made this commitment during a visit by the outgoing Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, to introduce the incoming GMD, Mele Kyari, to the Speaker.

Hon. Gbajiabiamila pledged to get the National Assembly to work further on the bill to give it a speedy passage, just as he commended Dr. Baru for stabilizing the oil and gas industry during his tenure as Group Managing Director of the NNPC.

“I thank you for working harmoniously with us, there were no fuel shortages, the usual scandals associated with the oil industry were absent throughout your tenure”, Hon. Gbajabiamila said.

He affirmed the readiness of the 9th National Assembly to sustain the existing cordial relationship with NNPC adding that “as long as oil and gas remains the mainstay of the economy, we must get the industry right”.

On the incoming GMD, Mallam Mele Kyari, the Speaker described him as a highly respected industry professional whose reputation precedes his name, saying “I have no doubt based on what I have heard, that you will definitely make it”.

Speaking earlier, Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, congratulated the Speaker on his election, describing him as the best person to take the House of Representatives to the next level.

He said NNPC, even after his tenure, would remain focused on delivering dividends of democracy to the Nigerian people and also sustain constructive engagement with the National Assembly and other critical stakeholders.

The GMD assured the Speaker of the new NNPC Management’s capacity to take the oil and gas industry to the next level.

“I thank you for supporting me, I have no doubt that you will equally support the incoming GMD. We thank Mr. President for appointing him and he will surely not disappoint”, he said.

He said the visit was in appreciation of the cordial relationship he had with the National Assembly throughout his tenure.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says has achieved 98 per cent automation of all transactions involving the supply, marketing and sale of the various grades and blends of Nigeria’s crude oil across the world.

Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division of the Corporation, Malam Mele Kyari, stated this in an interview with Oil & Gas Forum, NNPC Weekly TV show that the automation exercise which would be concluded in 2018 had enabled the corporation to achieve an end-to-end monitoring of every barrel of crude oil sold in the country.

“Today at a click of a button we can tell you how much crude oil is sold, at what price, who bought it and where it has gone to etc,” he said.

He said that the projection was to operate a complete paperless crude oil data management regime in line with the ongoing transformation of the processes which has witnessed sweeping reforms since 2015.

He listed the reforms to include; the open bid process of customer selection for lifting and purchase of Nigeria’s crude oil grades, emplacement of efficient crude for product import processes, leading to savings of $1 billion in one year as well as the introduction of improved pricing system, which has evolved into a robust and auditable pricing mechanism.

The GGM also explained that the reform had led to the harmonization of Nigeria’s crude oil data and lifting information, providing access to major internationally recognized reporting agencies like Plat and Argus Media to achieve real time reporting of Nigeria’s crude oil transactions.

He said this development had enabled the country to eliminate the perennial disagreement with its major stakeholder, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on actual production and lifting figures.

On the recent Policy Dialogue on crude oil sales and reserve Management in Nigeria organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, Malam Kyari said the forum provided the corporation an avenue to clarify some misinformation on the operations of crude oil marketing.

He said NNPC would continue to engage members of the public and other critical stakeholders to keep them abreast of innovations in the supply, marketing and sale of the various grades and blends of Nigeria’s crude oil across the world.
