Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect on Sunday.

This was after hitting out at what he perceived to be unfair discrimination surrounding his meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May.

Ozil, 29, was part of the Germany squad that exited the World Cup in Russia at the group stage and was the target of criticism for his performances as well as his meeting with Erdogan who has been accused of human rights abuses.

The Arsenal playmaker has Turkish ancestry and defended his actions in a lengthy statement, the first time he has publicly addressed the matter.

“For me, having a picture with President Erdogan wasn’t about politics or elections, it was about me respecting the highest office of my family’s country,” Ozil said in a statement on Twitter.

“My job is a football player and not a politician, and our meeting was not an endorsement of any policies.

The treatment I have received from the DFB (German Football Association) and many others makes me no longer want to wear the German national team shirt,” Ozil added.

“I feel unwanted and think what I have achieved since my international debut in 2009 has been forgotten.

“People with racially discriminative backgrounds should not be allowed to work in the largest football federation in the world that has players from dual-heritage families.

“Attitudes like theirs simply do not reflect the players they supposedly represent.
It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at international level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect,” he added.

“I used to wear the German shirt with such pride and excitement, but now I don’t.”

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud headed a late winner as the Gunners ended a run of two Premier League defeats with victory over a stubborn West Brom to climb back to third.

Giroud was making his first league start of the season and looped in an 86th minute header from a Mesut Ozil cross for his goal.

Until that moment the Gunners had enjoyed nearly 80% possession, but had struggled to find a way past inspired Baggies keeper Ben Foster.

He pulled off a number of key stops, including a double save when he parried an Alex Iwobi shot and blocked the rebound at the feet of Alexis Sanchez.

The 33-year-old former England keeper also tipped over a fizzing shot from Sanchez before West Brom nearly snatched a goal, with Claudio Yacob skying his shot over the bar after Arsenal keeper Petr Cech dropped a corner.

But Giroud finally broke the deadlock to keep Arsenal nine points behind leaders Chelsea, who beat Bournemouth.

Arsenal had buckled in defeats by Everton and Manchester City in their previous two games and the focus was on how they would respond against one of the more resolute teams to beat in the top flight.

It seemed like they were still feeling the impact of those losses as they had just one shot on target in the first half, but they managed 10 after the break as they increased their intensity and urgency.

Sanchez was their main threat as the Chile forward tried to drag the Gunners single-handedly to three points but, like his team, he found himself being continually frustrated.

Sanchez seemed set to score when he evaded a number of defenders in a run across the six-yard box only to strike his shot against the post, before Arsenal’s persistence was eventually rewarded through Giroud.

“It has been a big relief,” said the France striker. “We pushed to the end, kept believing in our game.

“We were very strong altogether and showed a good strong mentality. It was very important to win. We have shown a big mental strength.”

Arsenal moved top of the Premier League as they came from behind to beat Stoke at Emirates Stadium. The visitors took the lead through Charlie Adam’s penalty after Granit Xhaka elbowed Joe Allen.

Theo Walcott turned in substitute Hector Bellerin’s cross just before half-time for his 100th club goal. Mesut Ozil headed over goalkeeper Lee Grant to give Arsenal the lead before substitute Alex Iwobi side-footed home the third.

The Gunners leapfrog Chelsea on goals scored, with Antonio Conte’s side facing West Brom at Stamford Bridge on Sunday at 12:00 GMT.

Arsenal came into the game in great form after putting five past West Ham last Saturday and scoring four in Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Unbeaten in the league since an opening-day home defeat by Liverpool, that record looked in danger when Xhaka caught and cut Welshman Allen with his elbow, prompting referee Lee Mason to award the penalty from which Stoke scored. He did not show the Swiss a yellow card.

The Gunners had already lost Shkodran Mustafi to injury, with the German later ruled out for at least three weeks. His replacement, Bellerin, had a superb game. The Spain right-back frequently drove forward and it was from his low cross that Walcott glanced the equaliser.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain chipped a wonderful pass over the Stoke defence for Ozil to head his ninth league goal of the season, with Potters right-back Erik Pieters still running back having had to leave the pitch following treatment.

Iwobi, who scored in Basel, ensured Arsenal moved top ahead of Chelsea, having scored four more goals than the Blues. They are level on 34 points with a goal difference of +21.

Will Arsenal have the mental and physical stamina to still be in that position come the end of the season?

Scot Charlie Adam scored Stoke’s penalty. An Englishman has not scored for the Potters in the Premier League since May 2015 when Peter Crouch netted against Liverpool.
Stoke were also in excellent form, winning five of their previous nine games and losing just one.

They had only conceded five times in that run but history was not in their favour, having lost their past 14 visits to Arsenal and not winning there since August 1981.

Marc Muniesa went close with an early 30-yard volley before Adam sent Petr Cech the wrong way to mark his 31st birthday with his first goal of the season.

Twice Stoke came close to scoring only for Arsenal to score almost immediately afterwards. Marko Arnautovic threatened to make it 2-0 after an excellent run in the Gunners’ box but was crowded out just before Walcott’s equaliser.

Mark Hughes’ side increasingly found themselves on the back foot in the second half but came close to an equaliser when Peter Crouch was brought on for a corner and immediately headed down to force a smart, low save from Cech.

Alexis Sanchez’s fine hat-trick secured an emphatic victory over West Ham at London Stadium as Arsenal moved up to second in the Premier League table.

Mesut Ozil opened the scoring with Arsenal’s first shot on target after Angelo Ogbonna’s mistake and Sanchez’s cut-back set up a simple finish.

The Hammers threatened to equalise after the break before Sanchez turned, drove into the box and finished brilliantly past Darren Randolph.

The Chilean added a second eight minutes later with a low strike into the corner, before Andy Carroll came on for a first appearance since 18 August and stooped to nod in the rebound from a Dimitri Payet free-kick that hit the bar.

However, any faint hopes of a comeback were extinguished by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s excellent finish from range and Sanchez’s masterful dinked chip over the keeper.

The heavy defeat leaves Slaven Bilic’s side one point above the relegation zone after Sunderland beat Leicester 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Arsenal trail leaders Chelsea by three points but will slip to third if Liverpool win at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s side are now unbeaten in 13 league games, and their last away defeat was in February.

There was a 10-minute second-half spell during which many Arsenal fans might have recognised the familiar beginnings of a slump to draw or defeat despite having dominated for much of the game.

But Sanchez provided the match’s key moment when he killed Shkodran Mustafi’s booming pass from deep, turned past Anthony Makuanu and found the far angle of the net with brilliant ease with just under 20 minutes to play.

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny had been forced to clear a Manuel Lanzini cross bound for Ashley Fletcher from right underneath his own crossbar, West Ham’s record signing Andre Ayew had just come on, and Carroll – who scored a hat-trick against Arsenal in a 3-3 draw in April – was being readied for action.

However, it was Sanchez’s force that proved the most compelling. Each of his three goals were superbly taken but it was the final, hat-trick goal that will live longest in the memory.

Played through by Oxlade-Chamberlain, he feigned a dummy shot to fool already defeated Hammers keeper Randolph before delicately lifting the ball into the net for what must be one of the goals of the season so far.

West Ham were certainly not helped by losing James Collins to injury in the game’s early stages, and his replacement Alvaro Arbeloa looked off the pace.

But regardless of ill fortune, the Hammers remain without a win in the league since their home victory over Sunderland on 22 October.

Manager Slaven Bilic said this result, coming after Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat by Manchester United in the EFL Cup, was “a big humiliation”, and the fact that his players faded after Sanchez increased Arsenal’s lead will be another cause for concern.

A win for Hull in their match at Middlesbrough on Monday will send West Ham into the bottom three.

Mesut Ozil scored a stunning late goal as a resilient Arsenal came back from 2-0 down to beat Ludogorets Razgrad and reach the Champions League knockout stages.

Ozil was a picture of composure as he ran through on goal, chipped the keeper and cut inside two defenders before slotting in from close range for a dramatic winner.

Earlier on, Arsenal’s hopes of a repeat of their 6-0 win in the reverse tie were quickly dispelled when Jonathan Cafu put Ludogorets in front against the run of play by steering in a left-footed volley from a Wanderson free-kick.

Cafu turned provider three minutes later as he jinked past Kieran Gibbs and squared a ball for Claudiu Keseru to turn in as the Bulgarian side shocked the Gunners with a second in a frantic opening.

Granit Xhaka guided in a 15-yard shot from an Ozil cross to pull one back for Arsene Wenger’s side before Olivier Giroud expertly headed in Aaron Ramsey’s clipped cross to equalise.

Arsenal keeper David Ospina twice saved from Wanderson before Ozil secured his side’s progress into the last 16 and extended their unbeaten run to 15 games.

One of the highlights of Arsenal’s season so far has been the goalscoring form of Ozil. The German playmaker has already taken his tally this season to seven, having scored eight for the Gunners in total last term.

He should have opened the scoring early on when Francis Coquelin played him through on goal, but he struck a tame shot that was easily saved.

Ludogorets punished the miss with two goals, but Ozil then played a key part in Arsenal’s recovery as he gesticulated for his team to increase their effort.

He set up Xhaka for his first Champions League goal and timed his run to perfection to meet Mohamed Elneny’s pass on the way to his goal, adding to his hat-trick in the first game against Ludogorets at the Emirates.

Ozil has now been directly involved in eight goals in his past five games for Arsenal in all competitions, with five goals and three assists.

Ozil’s touchmap shows his influence on Arsenal’s attacking play – he had three shots and made four key passes during the match
Can Gunners maintain resolve?

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his side’s “prime target” was to win Group A in order to avoid playing tougher opposition.

The Gunners have gone out at the first knockout stage of the Champions League in the past six seasons, having last won their group in 2011-12.

Wenger’s side showed vulnerabilities at the back when Ludogorets went on the counter-attack, but they demonstrated spirit and character to recover. This means they could be ready to avoid the capitulations which have marred previous European and Premier League campaigns.

Arsenal’s mental strength will again be tested when they face Tottenham followed by Manchester United in the league before what could be a decider to finish top of Group A when they host Paris St-Germain.

The energy and goals of Alexis Sanchez playing as a central striker have proved a major success for Wenger this season.

However, with Giroud returning to fitness and scoring two key goals in Saturday’s top-flight win at Sunderland, Wenger chose to give the Frenchman his first start of the season against Ludogorets with the job of leading the Gunners’ attack.

Sanchez was shifted out to the left wing and, initially, it seemed to reduce the Chile international’s threat as well as Arsenal’s.

But Giroud did score the equaliser and Wenger now has to decide which attacking formation works best for his side in the key games coming up.

Burnley suffered a cruel defeat at Turf Moor as Arsenal secured victory with a controversial Laurent Koscielny goal in the final act of an intriguing match.

In added time, Theo Walcott headed across goal towards Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain whose effort went in off what appeared to be Koscielny’s elbow.

As well as a possible handball, there was also a hint of offside with captain Koscielny standing on the goalline.

Michael Keane had Burnley’s best chance, heading on to the crossbar.

But despite the Clarets’ fine defensive display, with Keane in particular impressing as they shut out Arsenal until the 94th minute, they came away with no points for their efforts.

The win allowed Arsenal to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City, who lost 2-0 at Tottenham in one of Sunday’s earlier kick-offs, to two points while overtaking Liverpool to claim third place.

Manager Arsene Wenger admitted his team were fortunate in victory but with this result at Turf Moor, and convincing victories over Chelsea in the league and Basel in the Champions League in the last week, the north Londoners have hit a fine run of form, extending their unbeaten stretch to six league games.

Immediately after the match, Koscielny – who was credited with the goal – said he did not know whether he had handled. “I tried with my right foot and I don’t know if I touch it with my hand,” the Frenchman said.

Even though Burnley did not appeal for handball at the time, their manager Sean Dyche said afterwards the ball “quite clearly” hit the defender’s hand.

To add to the confusion Arsenal’s winner caused, Oxlade-Chamberlain celebrated as if he had scored but the England international’s shot did appear to hit Koscielny’s arm before it crossed the line, while Dyche even suggested that it was the Arsenal captain who kicked the ball on to his own arm.

As another caveat, if it were the case that Oxlade-Chamberlain did kick the ball on to Koscielny’s arm, the defender would have been in an offside position.

“You have to question the added time, the corner and whether it should have come in, the handball and question whether we should have dealt with it,” added Dyche. “It’s a poor way to end a game.”

But no matter what the theories or Dyche’s thoughts, referee Craig Pawson saw nothing wrong with the winner which secured Arsenal a fifth successive Premier League win and ensured another win for Wenger as the 21st year of the 66-year-old’s reign began.

Arsenal were their usual selves in possession – accurate, quick, dominant – but their pleasing-on-the-eye play would often break down as soon as they closed in on the Burnley box, in the first half especially.

The visitors had just one shot on target before the break – a trifling Mesut Ozil attempt in the 16th minute – and so organised were Burnley in defence, it quickly became clear why Dyche’s side had conceded only five goals in their last 17 league games at home before this match.

Ozil was as disappointing as he was effervescent in the 3-0 win over Chelsea, his game summed up with a wayward shot which sailed into the stands when there were better options available to him.

Wenger admitted his team were jaded after three matches in eight days.

“We lacked sharpness and our legs were heavy and that was a game we could win 1-0 and also lose 1-0 on set-pieces,” the Frenchman said.

As the match progressed, the Gunners threatened more with Alexis Sanchez their most dangerous player, forcing a low save from goalkeeper Tom Heaton and then striking the bottom corner of the post after Burnley had failed to deal with an Ozil cross.

Eight points from their opening seven league games is a decent start for the newly promoted side, but that will not mask the disappointment of losing in such a manner on what was their fifth home game of the season.

The hosts went into the break wondering what could have been, with Sam Vokes squandering the best chance of the half as the Wales international – unmarked six yards from goal – headed Matt Lowton’s chipped cross wide when he had only Petr Cech to beat, and that is how they also ended the match.

Dyche’s men had to wait until the 60th minute for their first and only shot on target.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson out-jumped Koscielny to scare Cech with his header, while moments later Walcott was forced to scramble Vokes’ header clear to prevent a second chance from opening up for Gudmundsson.

While Burnley deserved at least a draw, their profligacy in front of goal, as well as their failure to hit the target – they have only managed 16 shots on target in the league this season – is concerning.

Arsenal cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Chelsea to hand Antonio Conte’s side back-to-back Premier League defeats in the London derby at Emirates Stadium.

A match expected to be a closely contested affair was blown apart in the 11th minute when Alexis Sanchez capitalised on a dreadful error by Gary Cahill to open the scoring on his 100th Arsenal outing.

Theo Walcott – also reaching a milestone in his 350th game for the Gunners – added a quickfire second, crowning a glorious passing move, and there was further attacking brilliance as the influential Mesut Ozil made it 3-0 five minutes before half-time.

A first league win over the Blues since October 2011 moves Arsene Wenger’s team up to third in the table behind Manchester City and Tottenham, who meet next weekend, while Conte has work to do as the early stages of his Chelsea reign veer off course.

Ozils-flying-shot
Ozils-flying-shot

Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas made his first league start of the season, on the back of a brace in Tuesday’s 4-2 EFL Cup win over Leicester City, but Arsenal swamped their opponents in central areas, while reverting to a back three early in the second period did nothing to restore Chelsea’s poise.

They have added a solitary point after three consecutive wins at the start of the campaign and are now down in eighth, below Crystal Palace on goal difference.

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla had an early shot pushed to safety by Thibaut Courtois but Chelsea appeared to have settled quickly before a moment to forget from Cahill.

The England centre-back received the ball from Branislav Ivanovic under slight pressure and hesitated before playing an ill-advised and under-hit backpass that Sanchez pounced on to race towards goal and chip home a classy finish.

If the opener was entirely Chelsea’s making, they could do little two minutes and 19 seconds later as Cazorla, Ozil and Alex Iwobi combined in a slick passing move before Walcott converted Hector Bellerin’s low cross.

Willian flashed a drive across goal wide and Eden Hazard had a shot blocked as Chelsea’s creative talents sought a response, but their humiliation continued five minutes before half-time.

Ozil was at the heart of things once more, spinning away from N’Golo Kante and galloping forward on the break to receive a chipped return ball from Sanchez.

The strike that sealed another wonderfully worked goal was not completely cleanly hit, but Ozil’s volley into the turf sailed over Courtois and in off the far post.

Granit Xhaka was on for the injured Francis Coquelin by that stage and early in the second half the Switzerland international released Walcott inside the Chelsea box but his attempt to pick out Sanchez was wasteful.

The ineffective Fabregas made way after 54 minutes at the scene of his former glories, with Marcos Alonso’s introduction heralding a switch to the 3-5-2 formation Conte favoured at Juventus and with the Italian national team.

Arsenal still continued to cut through his team at will and Courtois was furious at the flimsy defensive cover in front of him when he denied Walcott with his legs in the 69th minute.

Further gloss to the scoreline never arrived but this was nevertheless one of the most comprehensive wins over a fierce rival that Wenger has enjoyed during a reign one week away from its 20th anniversary.

Leicester City forward Riyad Mahrez has won the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award.

Mahrez has scored 17 goals and made 11 assists in 34 league games to take Leicester to the cusp of the title.

The award was voted for by the Algeria international’s fellow professionals.

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, 20, was named PFA Young Player of the Year, while Manchester City forward Izzy Christiansen won the Women’s Player of the Year award.

Sunderland striker Beth Mead, 20, was named Women’s Young Player of the Year.

Mahrez, 25, held off competition from Tottenham forward Harry Kane, Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, West Ham United midfielder Dimitri Payet and fellow Leicester men Jamie Vardy and N’Golo Kante to win the award.

Mahrez was handed the prize at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday, hours after scoring in his side’s 4-0 win over Swansea City as leaders Leicester moved to within five points of the title.

“Without my team-mates I wouldn’t get this award,” Mahrez, who joined Leicester from French second-tier side Le Havre in January 2014, said.

“And for my manager and the staff – without them I wouldn’t receive this award and I wouldn’t score. It’s the team spirit, and I want to dedicate it to them.

“It’s extra special because if the players vote for me it’s because they’ve seen I’ve been great this year so I’m happy.”

One year ago, Alli was getting ready to play at Rochdale for MK Dons having been loaned back to the League One club after signing for Tottenham for an initial £5m in February 2015.

This season he has scored 10 times in 32 top-flight games to help Spurs challenge Leicester for the title.

In addition, Alli has made six senior appearances for England, scoring in a 2-0 friendly win over France last November.

Alli was unable to collect the award in person as Tottenham host West Brom on Monday, but former Spurs player and manager Ossie Ardiles collected the prize on his behalf.

“Thank you Ossie, the Tottenham legend for receiving this award for me,” Alli said in a video message screened at the awards.

“Sorry I can’t be there tonight but we have a big game tomorrow.”

Leicester and Tottenham have provided eight players between them for the Professional Footballers’ Association Premier League Team of the Year.

Mahrez is one of a quartet of players from league leaders Leicester, while Alli is one of four men from Spurs.

Ozil, a PFA Player of the Year nominee, misses out.

Players from champions Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal dominate the Women’s Super League 1 Team of the Year.

Burnley, battling for promotion to the Premier League, have four players in the Championship Team of the Year.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton, defender Michael Keane, midfielder Joey Barton and striker Andre Gray represent the team that is currently top of the league on goal difference.

Leaders Wigan have four players in the League One Team of the Year, with Reece Wabara, Craig Morgan, Yanic Wildschut and Will Grigg included.

League Two champions Northampton have three inclusions in the division’s Team of the Year.

Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in the English game, won the PFA Merit Award.

Giggs, 42, follows in the footsteps of former United greats Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton in picking up the prize.

Now assistant to manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, Giggs made a club record 963 appearances for the Red Devils and won 13 league titles, four FA Cups and two Champions League crowns during a glittering career.

Giggs, PFA Player of the Year in 2009 and two-time Young Player of the Year in 1992 and 1993, said: “When you win each award you look down the trophy and you see the players who have won it before and you realise what a great accolade it is.

“This is the same. I’ve been here on the nights when people have won it and it’s legends of the game. I’m fortunate to win it and I’ll enjoy it.”

Danny Welbeck’s last-gasp winner saw Arsenal come from behind to defeat 10-man Leicester City 2-1 at Emirates Stadium, moving them to within two points of the leaders in the Premier League title race.

Jamie Vardy won and converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time, but Danny Simpson was sent off for a second booking early in the second half in an incident that changed the game.

The Gunners capitalised when substitute Theo Walcott equalised with 20 minutes remaining and sealed a dramatic victory through the returning Welbeck – off the bench to make his first appearance since April – as he headed home in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Leicester’s defeat is only their third of the league campaign, while Arsenal’s second straight victory puts them within striking distance of the top of the table ahead of the meeting between title rivals Manchester City and Tottenham.

Arsenal had a half-hearted penalty claim turn down after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross struck the arm of N’Golo Kante from close range, but it was the visitors – unchanged for the sixth straight game – who created the first major opportunity.

Marc Albrighton delivered a threatening cross from the right channel and Vardy got up at the back post to head towards the bottom corner, but Petr Cech reacted superbly to get down and save.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was correctly denied by an offside flag after heading in Mesut Ozil’s inviting cross, while Cech clawed away a curling attempt from Kante that was swerving dangerously towards the top corner in an end-to-end encounter.

Leicester made the breakthrough in the last minute of the first half when a trademark counter-attack led to Vardy being clumsily brought down by Nacho Monreal in the corner of the box.

Vardy took the penalty himself and hammered his attempt into the bottom-right corner, sending Cech the wrong way.

Arsenal, already without the injured Gabriel, had to replace Laurent Koscielny at half-time as Calum Chambers came on and they were relieved to see the visitors have a penalty claim turned down when Riyad Mahrez went down under pressure from Monreal.

The game took a crucial turn in the 54th minute when Simpson was shown a second yellow card for tugging back Giroud, just five minutes after fouling Alexis Sanchez to pick up his initial booking – the first time Leicester had been reduced to 10 men in the league this season.

It was Arsenal’s first shot on target that gave them the equaliser. Hector Bellerin’s cross from the right was cleverly headed on by Giroud and Walcott beat Kasper Schmeichel with a cool finish nine minutes after coming on.

Danny Drinkwater was fortunate not to be penalised for a high challenge on Aaron Ramsey a few moments later, before Welbeck made his comeback from the substitutes’ bench.

Arsenal pressed hard for a late winner, with Per Mertesacker heading inches wide and Giroud being thwarted by an excellent reflex save from Schmeichel.

And the breakthrough arrived when Ozil’s perfectly flighted free-kick was coverted by Welbeck, sending the home crowd wild.

Arsenal scored twice in 88 first-half seconds to overwhelm Bournemouth and move level on points with second-placed Tottenham.

Mesut Ozil lashed the ball home from 12 yards for the Gunners’ opener, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain drifted in from the right and scored with a low shot.

Bournemouth played some slick football at times and had more attempts at goal, but their finishing was poor.

Matt Ritchie was the chief culprit, with none of his five shots on target.

For Arsenal, who had not won in the league since 3 January, the relief was clear. They controlled the game with early possession before catching Bournemouth with a pair of swift strikes which rendered the contest a foregone conclusion.

Ozil set the Gunners on their way with a powerful shot after Olivier Giroud had headed Aaron Ramsey’s long pass into the German’s feet.

And Arsene Wenger’s pre-match assertion that Oxlade-Chamberlain was in form and would offer good balance on the right proved prophetic when the winger came inside and his low shot went in via the far post.

Again, Ramsey had a hand in the goal – the Welshman pulling the strings for the Gunners and giving Bournemouth a lesson in turning some eye-catching moves into ruthless attacks.

Despite chasing the game in the second half, it took until stoppage time for Bournemouth to test Petr Cech, when the Arsenal keeper made a fine double save to deny Steve Cook and Harry Arter from low shots.

Until then, it had been a succession of wayward pops at goal and intricate, but not incisive, approach play.

Bournemouth should be applauded for their desire to pass the ball, create space and use the flanks but they lacked any presence up front.

Lone striker Benik Afobe, who was signed from Wolves for a fee of about £10m, had scored in his last three games for the Cherries but failed to register a single effort on goal against his former club, before he was substituted after 76 minutes.
