The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday gave heads of tertiary institutions the green light to begin the 2020/2021 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) screening on September 7.

The board explained that the shift in the date of admission was meant to allow pupils sitting for the 2020 Ordinary Level examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examination (NBTE) obtain the required qualifications.

JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, announced this Monday after a consultative virtual meeting with vice chancellors, Rectors and Provosts of tertiary institutions.

About 1,352,988 candidates, who scored 120 and above in this year’s UTME, are awaiting results.

Oloyede said: “The view of JAMB is that while we go on consulting at a point when it becomes necessary for decision, we should all come together and take a decision. Presently, as you are aware, WAEC starts the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) on August 17, it will go on till September 7.

“Similarly, on September 21 or thereabout, NABTEB will begin its examination that will go on till October 15. Immediately after that, NECO will start on November 5 and will hold till November 18.

“Rather than making candidates run, particularly when they will have to write their school certificate examinations in different towns and rush to university elsewhere for post-UTME, like somebody rushing from Sokoto to Ibadan for post-UTME, we believe, as a custodian of the highest sector of the education system, we should avoid that.”

The JAMB Registrar noted that institutions whose post-UTME screening is mandatory for candidates would have to spread such exercise in two phases.

“For those (institutions) that want to take post-UTME, that cannot be earlier than September 7, and it will be held twice – September 7 to October 4. And then, it will be held for the second time on November 18 to mop up those who are taking their school certificate examinations,” he said.

Oloyede, who hailed the submissions of heads of tertiary institutions during the meeting, said those that conduct admissions without the administration of any post-UTME screening should also ensure that candidates whose SSCE results will be released towards the end of the year are not denied participation in the admission.

Also, the JAMB Registrar said the board had withheld the results of candidates who sat for this year’s UTME at Correctional Service Centres (prisons) for suspected infractions.

“There are candidates who took exams in the prison yards that we know are not prisoners. So, we wrote to the correctional centres to explain how that happened, because we did not want non-prisoners to take advantage of the concessions we give to inmates,” he said.

The donation is part of the set’s contributions to assisting the institution in its re-accreditation crusade.

The 74 units of textbooks, authored by foreign scholars, consisted of 37 different titles from the varying fields of communication and technology and were received by the Head of the Mass Communication Department of the institution, Amos Kola, in Abeokuta.

Flanked by the institution’s Bursar, Oluyinka Ogunsola, Director of the School of Communication and Technology, Dr. Goke Rauf, Head of Department (Communication), Amos Kola, as well as the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Sulaiman Adebiyi, the rector assured that the management would soon get the “Approval in Principle” of the National University Commission (NUC) to commence degree programmes in some courses.

The Rector further disclosed that the much sought-after MAPOLY Campus Radio would soon make its debut into the Nigeria radio airwaves, stressing that all arrangement for such was already on the final stage.

Earlier in his remarks, leader of the 1990/1991 set, Pastor Ezekiel Obasanya, told the Rector and management of the institution that his set was around to water the seed planted by his set in the year 1990 when it established the Mass Communication library and ensure that it grew satisfactorily.

Obasanya, who had in his team, a senior staff of the School in the Students Affairs, Yemi Ajibola and Special Assistant to Governor Amosun on Media and Strategy, Sola Balogun among others, noted that MAPOLY had produced foremost journalists in the Nigerian media practice.

The delegation, however, lamented that the MAPOLY Campus Radio was yet to hit the airwaves but assured that the set would not hesitate to “partner, network, as well as collaborate with the management of the institution in its efforts towards taking the institution to an enviable height among higher institutions in the country.”

In his own remarks, the HOD, commended members of the 1990/1991 set for deeming it appropriate to plough back into the institution that gave them the desired life saving meal ticket which they are all enjoying with their families till date.

The HOD, who described the book presentations as his own “personal birthday gift” since such was coming in less than 72 hours to his golden birthday anniversary, further acknowledged that the 1990/1991 set had the best of training any institution in Nigeria would bequeath on his alumnus not-withstanding that he was a product of University of Lagos.

He, however, pledged that the department would jealously make use of the textbooks to the point that 10 years to come, the alumnus would be proud to do more for the department
