The All Progressives Congress on Saturday announced Senator Ahmed Lawan and Senator George Akume as sole candidates for the position of President and Deputy Senate President of the 8th Senate respectively.

This followed a primary election conducted by the National Working Committee of the APC at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

National Secretary of the Party, Mala Buni, who served as returning officer announced that 33 Senators were accredited to vote after which Lawan got 32 votes and one vote was declared invalid.

Buni said, “By the powers conferred on me by the NWC of the APC as the Chief Returning Officer of this election after having certified that Dr. Ahmed Lawan has fulfilled all the requirements of the party, he is hereby nominated as the sole candidate of the party for the position of Senate President of the 8th Senate.”

A similar procedure was adopted in the election of Akume. Akume got 32 out of the 33 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Lawan said while he was grateful for the confidence reposed in him by the party and his colleagues, he was saddened that his colleagues “in the other camp” did not participate in the process.

He pleaded with the NWC to assist him in winning over all other senators in the National Assembly because he would require their support not only to win on Tuesday but also to provide leadership at the legislative arm of the government.

The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has accused journalists covering the state of fabricating stories, particularly with regards to his role in the crisis rocking the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The governor who made  the accusation on Monday in Abeokuta, the state capital said he has declared ‘war’ on journalists in the state.

Amosun spoke at the Gateway Hall venue of the meeting between the governor, National Assembly members and other stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress.

The meeting was called to discuss the modalities for the registration of APC members in the state.

Amosun, who emerged from the meeting looking rather unhappy, vented his anger on the journalists when he was asked to comments on the event, angrily dared the journalists to publish all he was saying to them.  He spoke in Yoruba.

He declared that the journalists in the state were not his friends, adding that  he had only decided not to move against the journalists because it was not the first time they had written fabricated stories about him.

Amosun said in Yoruba, “Nka ti eri ohun ko ni e nko. Ohun to sele ni yen. Eyin na mo pe gbogbo nkan ti e nko yen, agbelero ni. E ki i se ore mi o! Write it o, that I said you are doing ‘agbelero’.

“E ti ko o; emi o kan soro mo ni o. Gbogbo agbelero ti e nko; se b’o ti sele simi ri, mo kan nwo yin ni; e maa lo ko lo! Mo ri pe enko loo, esi ma ko lo!”

Meaning (You journalists have been writing fabricated stories. You only write what you don’t see. You all know that you have been fabricating stories. You are not my friends, go and write it that I said you have been fabricating stories.

I just decided not to take any action. All the fabricated stories, it has happened to me, I’m only looking at you. Go on and keep fabricating stories. I can see you keep fabricating the stories, keep doing that).
