The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has promised to give the necessary support to the Ogun State Government on the reconstruction of all the deplorable federal roads in the state.

Akpabio stated this at the grand finale of the Yewa Cultural Festival with the theme: “Celebration of Culture, Tradition, Music, Cuisine and Dance,” held at the ultra-modern pavilion, Empire Field, Ilaro-Yewa, Ogun State on Saturday.

The senate president was particular about the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta road, even as he affirmed that all hands would be on deck to ensure the completion of the road.

He said that he insisted on driving to the venue for him to have first-hand knowledge of what people go through on the road every day, adding that it took his team more than two hours to drive to Ilaro from Lagos.

Akpabio promised that the Senate would ensure that the construction of the road is handed over to a competent contractor, adding that they would work with the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure its completion.

He said: “The 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is going to get the list of things you want us to do here.

“I saw the road, two trucks fell on the road, so we ended up spending over two hours on the road. I was determined to go through the road that you go through. Now, I have seen what you have been seeing. From today, I prophesy that your roads are done.

“Yewaland has the greatest number of industries that local government can ever have in Nigeria, just five local governments. Therefore, we recognize the need to use the best set of contractors to do your roads because of the wear and tear. I assure you that we will be working with our brother, Dapo Abiodun. Your lives will not be the same again.”

Senator Akpabio used the occasion to advise youths in Yewaland and the state as a whole to stay off drugs and other fraudulent activities, assuring them that their lives would be better when they stayed clean.

“For the youths of Yewaland, I will advise you, never engage in anything that will bring disrepute to your domain. Don’t do drugs, no banditry, no kidnapping, no fraud. I assure you that the blessings of God will be upon you,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, Governor Abiodun pleaded with the Senate to prevail on the Federal Government to transfer the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road to the state because of its importance to the socio-economic development of the state.

The governor said it took him three hours to drive from Abeokuta to Ilaro, noting that efforts made by the state to ensure the transfer of the road did not yield any positive results.

Prince Abiodun said that his administration is currently concluding discussions on the reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Olorunda-Imeko and the Abeokuta-Iborro-Ilaro roads.

He said: “I also want to announce to you that I am currently concluding discussions with the Minister of Works on the reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Olorunda-Imeko road and the completion of the Abeokuta-Iborro-Ilaro road. This will complement the Imasayi-Iborro-Ayetoro road.

“Mr Senate President, it took me three hours to get here from Abeokuta. I am sure it took you just as much to get here from Lagos because of the deplorable state of Lagos-Abeokuta Road. Mr Senate President, please help us with the Federal Government to transfer this road to us. This road is very key to our socio-economic economic development.”

The governor disclosed that the construction of the Sagamu-Obele road has commenced, using the Dangote Cement Company tax credit scheme.

“I am proud to say that the construction of Sagamu to Obele road that I personally facilitated in 2019 when I assumed office in partnership with Dangote Cement Company using the Federal tax credit scheme has begun,” he said.

The governor also noted that the Ilaro-Owode road is nearing completion in line with his promise to put an end to the era of only performing groundbreaking in Yewaland.

Prince Abiodun promised that his administration would continue to support various cultural initiatives to keep the identity of the people of the state intact.

Earlier in his remarks, the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle commended the Senate President and the governor for attending the grand finale of the festival.

He disclosed that the festival will be held every two years.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of an award of excellence on Governor Dapo Abiodun and the installation of the Senate President as the Are Fiwagboye of Yewaland.

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has directed the commencement of the immediate reconstruction of Ita-Oshin-Ayetoro road in Ogun West Senatorial District.
Consequently, the governor has directed the Ministry of Works to carry out an assessment of the road preparatory to the reconstruction plan.
Governor Abiodun who made this known during the commissioning of the 7 kilometres Ibooro/Imasayi/Ayetoro road in Yewa North Local Government Area, said that it has become expedient to reconstruct the federal road which he said would not make movement from Abeokuta to Ibooro and other communities enjoyable if left undone.
Abiodun, while noting that his administration would divide the road into phases, said that movement from the state capital to Ayetoro would soon become a pleasurable drive.
“On my way here from Abeokuta, I rode through the Ita-Oshin to this intersection. I
asked my Special Adviser, how many kilometres bearing in mind that this is yet another federal road amongst so many federal roads that we have in Ogun State.
“This road will not allow us to reap the full benefit of this road that we are doing from Imasayi to Ayetoro. We have to do something about it and I want to make that pronouncement today.
“I have instructed that the Ministry of Works immediately come here and do an assessment of the road from Ita-Oshin to Ibooro. We will divide that road into phases, maybe two or three phases and we will begin the immediate reconstruction of that road.
“We have left it initially because the Federal Government promised that they were going to reconstruct it. But as you can see, they are not ready. Be rest assured that coming from Abeokuta to Ayetoro very soon will be a very pleasurable drive,” he said.
Prince Abiodun also launched the second phase of the the Ibooro/Imasayi/Ayetoro road, even as he promised its timely completion.
The governor while noting that his administration has commissioned more roads in Yewaland than any other government in the last sixteen years, added that his administration is not bothered by naysayers, but is fully committed towards the development of the state.
Abiodun, while appealing to the people of the state to continue to support the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration, said that the deregulation of the petroleum industry by the president would bring better times for the country.
The state helmsman also disclosed that the president, since he deregulated the petroleum sector had ensured constant engagement with state governors to ensure that palliatives are put in place to reduce its impact.
He added that his administration has started to domesticate some of the palliative measures, saying that the effect would soon be felt by the people of the state.
Governor Abiodun also disclosed that grains, rice, and maize released by the Federal Government to state governments would soon be distributed to the people across the length and breadth of the state in another ten days.
He said that a committee that will include those in government, traditional rulers, community development associations, market men and women and religious leaders that would ensure the even distribution of the food items would be constituted soon.
He charged youths, residents of the community, and the traditional rulers to take charge and ownership of the road, thanking the paramount ruler of Yewaland for his leadership role.
Earlier in his remarks, the Special Adviser, Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, noted that the road which had been in bad condition before its reconstruction would bring succour to the residents of surrounding communities and mitigate flooding, which was initially common in the area.
He added that the road would also enable smooth transportation of farm produce, commuters, and motorists. “The total length of the road to Ayetoro is 21 kilometres, with a width of 8 kilometres.
“The phase one we are commissioning today is 7 kilometres, which have been completed and is being commissioned today. The reconstruction of phase two would soon commence,” he said.
The Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle appreciated Prince Abiodun for opening up not only Yewaland, but the entire state.
Oba Olugbenle, who also urged the governor to complete the phase two of the 21 kilometers stretch of the road, said that the people of the district appreciates him for his passion and commitment to develop all parts of the state.
The Iyaloja General of Ogun State, Alhaja Yemisi Abass, while appreciating Governor Abiodun for giving the people of the town who are predominantly farmers an avenue to get their farm produce to the market, also thanked him for making movement easy for them.
She urged the governor to put naysayers to shame with the completion of the second phase of the road, adding that the total completion of would ensure the overall prosperity of the people.

The Ogun State Government, on Friday, said the Obong of Calabar, His Royal Majesty, Edidem Abasi, directed his attack on the deplorable state of the Abeokuta-Ibadan road at the wrong quarters.
The Obong, who is the Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), had on Thursday lamented the poor state of some roads in the state.
But the state government, in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Works, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, said the road in question belongs to the Federal Government.
He said that the Dapo Abiodun administration in Ogun State had been giving quality and adequate attention to all roads in the state, whether federal, state or local. This, he said, had led to the rehabilitation of over 400 roads.
Besides, according Akinsanya, the contract for the rehabilitation of the road has been awarded to Kopek, which has already started work from the Ibadan end.
He added that the state government started working on the road from Adatan in Abeokuta but the Federal Government directed the State Government to stop construction at Moore Junction because it asked KOPEK to take over the road.
Akinsanya noted that the state government was yet to receive major refund from the federal government on the money expended on federal roads.
He listed some of the roads to include; Ijebu-Ode-Mojoda-Epe, Lafenwa-Rounda (to be extended to Alamala), and Atan-Lusada-Agbara road, adding that part of the Sango Ota-Abeokuta road had been done, especially the Sango Ota area.
The statement reads: “On Thursday, the Obong of Calabar and Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), His Royal Majesty, Edidem Abasi, was reported to have lamented the deplorable condition of roads in Ogun State. Narrating his unpleasant experience on the way to the university to attend some of the activities marking its 30th convocation ceremony, the Obong called on traditional rulers in the state to use their offices to appeal to Governor Dapo Abiodun to pay attention to the roads.
“The Obong reportedly stated this at his lodge within the university campus when he played host to three traditional rulers in the state, namely the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle; the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, and the Ajalaye of Ilogun South, Ijebu Northeast, Oba Emmanuel Olusanu.
“Without necessarily joining issues with His Majesty, there is a need to make a clarification. The road about which the revered traditional ruler spoke, namely the Abeokuta-Ibadan road, is a federal road. We are aware that it is residents of Ogun State that inhabit the area but there is still a need to set the records straight. “Interestingly, the road in question has now been awarded by the Federal Government to Kopek Nigeria Ltd.
“To be sure, the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led government in Ogun State has, in line with his ISEYA agenda, been giving quality attention to all roads in the state regardless of their ownership status.
“For instance, the Atan-Lusada-Agbara road being rehabilitated by the Ogun State government is a federal road, just like the roads in Sango-Ota which are receiving adequate attention. Others include Epe-Ijebu Ode road, Siun -Kobape-Abeokuta road .
“It is important to recognize that because of the way Ogun as a Gateway State that borders Lagos, Oyo, Ondo and the Republic of Benin is configured, it has many federal roads which the State Government are also working on.The Ogun State government has had to repair many of them and awaiting refund from the Federal Government.
“The Obong, a Federal Government appointee, directed his plea to the wrong quarters. It is the Federal Government that has authority over the road.
“On Ogun State’s part, the state government has been able to do over 400 kilometres of roads across the state. Indeed, there would still be work left to do if the Ogun State government devoted all its resources to reconstructing federal roads in the state. They are that extensive.
“Our revered traditional rulers are urged to seek clarifications and make investigations into issues so that they do not direct their grievances at the wrong authority and make statements that may put government in bad light.
“The Obong of Calabar should plead for the immediate release of funds to Kopek rather than making sweeping allegations against the Ogun State government.”

A former Senator from Ogun West Senatorial District of Ogun State, Kola Bajomo has called on all indigenes of Ogun West to remain united in the quest of ensuring that the District present a formidable candidate for the governorship seat in the State.

Senator Bajomo who spoke as a guest lecturer at a reception organised by Yewaland Development Forum for a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Rahamon Bello held at Rotary Center Ladoke Akintola Crescent Lagos State, said the zone has all the potentials to win the 2019 governorship elections if they are united.

Senator Bajomo who represented Ogun West Senatorial District between 2007 to 2015, said the marginalisation of Yewas zone of the State if not addressed now is capable of degenerating into a situation of creating public outrage and youth restiveness in the area within the shortest time.

Speaking on the topic “Ogun State Project: Stemming the erosion of economic and political agitations of the underdeveloped West District”, Senator Bajomo appealed to all Politicians in Ogun State to allow justice and fairness to prevail.

“The issue of governance should go beyond parochial personal interest in order to prevent public outrage that may damage the integrity and credibility of Ogun State as a State of heroes and heroines in the history of democracy in our nation and in the continent of Africa”.

Speaking on the need for all Yewas to remain united, the guest speaker said, “If we all agree to sink minor divisive differences that has made us a divided race or district, we shall be able to match victoriously to the government seat in 2019 from where we can now end this frustrating history of deprivation and marginalisation”.

“Our coming to the State house in 2019 will enable us to play the decisive game of equity and fairness that has made development eluded us for a very long time”.

He also appealed to aspirants from the zone to realise “that all of us can only be a winner if one of us is a winner”.

Earlier while welcoming guests to the programme, the National President of Yewa Development Forum, Alhaji Ayo Adeyemi said for Yewa to achieve the dream, “we need leaders who can take risks leaders who are willing to make meaningful sacrifices for the development of Yewaland, leaders who are humble accommodating, understanding, accessible and willing to serve without counting cost or expecting returns”.
