The remains of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Late , Alli Okunmade II, have been buried amid rains of tributes.

The late Olubadan was buried at his Aliiwo ancestral home in Ibadan around 4.30pm on Friday.

Recall that the late monarch, who reigned for two years, died at the age of 81 on Thursday at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, after a brief illness.

The state deputy governor, Bayo Lawal, led other government functionaries to the family burial ground at Aliiwo in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of the state.

The lying-in-state was held at the Mapo Hall from 12 noon to 1pm before the remains of the monarch were moved to Aliwo for burial after prayers.

President Tinubu mourns

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu mourned the passing of the late Olubadan.

The president said he received the news of the monarch’s passing with a deep sense of grief.

President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Chief Anuri Ngelale, condoled with the family of the Olubadan, the government of Oyo State, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State over this gaping loss.

Tinubu, who said he mourns the Olubadan, also celebrated his remarkable life of service to his people, the state, and the nation.

“His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, was an exceptional king who used his ancestral stool in the service of humanity. He was compassionate, courageous, and an unrelenting advocate of the pristine ideals of peace, honesty, and unity. His wise counsel will be sorely missed at this time in the life of our country,” he said.

Tinubu urged all who are in mourning to find solace in the immortal legacies of the Olubadan, stating that the Olubadan lives eternally in his good deeds and in the memories of everyone touched by the majesty of his essence.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, is dead. He was aged 81. His remains will be interred according to Islqmoc rites today, Friday, March 15, 2024, at his Aliiwo ancestral home in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Oba Balogun spent two years on the throne of his forefathers, having been presented the Staff of Office by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on March 11, 2022.

Confirming his death in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on Thursday, Makinde said Oba Balogun died Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The governor described the late monarch as a towering figure akin to an Iroko tree.

He wrote, “With total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing unto glory of our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

“A mighty Iroko has fallen; Oba Balogun has joined the ancestors.

“In Kabiyesi, Ibadanland had a cosmopolitan and well-experienced Olubadan, who made indelible marks on the sands of history and achieved greatly within a short while.

“On behalf of the government and good people of the state, I condole with the immediate family of the Oba Balogun, the Olubadan-in-Council, the state Traditional Council and the people of Ibadanland. It is my prayer that God grants repose to the soul of our late monarch.”

“The passing of Oba Dr. Balogun marks the end of an era for Ibadanland, leaving behind a profound void in its rich history and heritage,” he added.

The late Olubadan was born on October 18, 1942.

The late Olubadan ascended his forefathers’ throne two years ago after the passage of the late Oba Saliu Adetunji.

On Monday, the late monarch thanked God for the grace and privilege to clock two years on the throne, just as he thanked members of his advisory council for their unflinching support so far.

Balogun, in a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media, Oladele Ogunsola, in Ibadan, the state capital, said the second anniversary, which coincided with the commencement of this year’s Ramadan fast, was also used as an opportunity by the monarch to ask for prayers for the country by the Islamic faithful and expression of love for one another to make the period stress-free for the adherents.

The monarch said his clocking two years on the throne was a special grace by his creator that he could not take for granted.

The late Olubadan was a British trained Ph.d holder, a former university lecturer, former member of management staff of Shell British Petroleum, former governorship candidate of the defunct Nigeria People’s Party, former Senator and a successful business man.

His last official outing was the Olubadan Advisory Council meeting, which he presided over last Saturday.

At that meeting, the decision to disrobe Mogaji Akinsola, Oladoja, was taken.

He, however, on Tuesday instructed the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, to head a small committee to deliberate on last Friday’s decision on what should be the position of Ibadan Zone in the proposed newly reconstituted Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The decision of the small committee was earlier on Thursday ratified by the Olubadan Advisory Council at a meeting presided over by Otun Olubadan and the former Governor of the state, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja and was to be taken to the late Oba Balogun for his signature Friday morning so as to meet the deadline for submission to the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters later in the day.

The late Olubadan is survived by their wives, children, and grandchildren.

Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye on Friday, December 22, described Ibadan as very strategic in the affairs of Yorubaland and Nigeria in general, saying the ancient city cannot be ignored for any reason.

Oba Ghandi, who was on Tuesday, December 18, installed as the 21st Soun of Ogbomoso, made the remark during his visit to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, at his Alarere, Ibadan residence.

Accompanied by some of the principal Chieftaincy title holders of the ancient town, including: Are Ago, Iyalode and Abese, the new Soun, who described Ibadan as a home to him, noting that he was born in Catholic Hospital, Oluyoro, Oke-Ofa in the ancient metropolis and lived in Ibadan for 27 years.

He noted that the important and strategic position Ibadan occupies in the affairs of Yorubaland made it compelling for him to visit his brother Oba, the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The visit which coincided with the visit by the members of the Karim Adeyemi Foundation to the palace, afforded Oba Ghandi to recall his relationship with the Republic of Germany where the young Karim Adeyemi plays professional soccer with Borusa Dortmund Club and how he had facilitated more than 20 young Nigerians through an MTN programme to play soccer in the country.

Soun commended Oba Balogun for the peace being enjoyed in Ibadan under his reign, promising to collaborate with him and other brother Obas in the state, especially the three Imperial Majesties, Olubadan, himself and the Alaafin of Oyo to advance the cause of the state in all ramifications.

Speaking, Oba Balogun, who expressed delight at the visit said Ibadan belongs to all as recalled by Oba Ghandi and assured him of his readiness to work together with him and their colleagues in the state, stressing that the relationship between Ogbomoso and Ibadan has been for agelong and can only continue to wax stronger.

The visit by the Karim Adeyemi Foundation which comprised the young player, Karim, his parents, family members and some of his friends in his football team in Germany, according to Mr. Adeyemi was to ensure that the young Nigerian relates with his roots.

He disclosed that the Foundation was set up as a means of the player giving back to the society, Nigeria in particular, noting that the current visit was marked with a football match at the Olubadan Stadium, the previous day where some young Nigerians were empowered.

High Chief Rashidi Ladoja Wednesday led other members of the Olubadan Advisory Council to the Alarere home of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, for an emergency council meeting.

The development could be described as a dramatic turn of event, as it was against the hostile reception given the Otun Olubadan and the former governor by members of the Council at the last meeting of the Council on September 18.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the former governor was not only in attendance, he also participated in the meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Ladoja said he was invited to the meeting. He added: “I honoured the invitation for a meeting at the palace to resolve issues around the constitution of some committees that are exclusive right of members of Olubadan Advisory Council, including Chieftaincy Installation and Dispute Resolution Committee.

Driving in a convoy, all the members of the Council, except Oba Adebayo Akande (Ekarun Olubadan) drove in at few minutes past noon with Oba Owolabi Olakulehin (Balogun of Ibadanland) leading other Obas including, Eddy Oyewole (Osi Olubadan), Tajudeen Ajibola (Otun Balogun), Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe (Osi Balogun), Biodun Kola-Daisi (Ashipa Olubadan), Kolawole Adegbola (Ashipa Balogun), Hamidu Ajibade (Ekerin Olubadan), John Dada Isioye (Ekerin Balogun) and Abiodun Azeez (Ekarun Balogun).
In his reaction after the meeting, Sen. Ladoja disclosed that he was invited to the meeting, saying, “I honoured the invitation for a meeting at the palace to resolve issue around the constitution of some committees that are exclusive right of members of Olubadan Advisory Council including Chieftaincy Installation and Dispute Resolution Committee.
“Membership of the Committee is an exclusive right of the Olubadan Advisory Council and not open to non-members”, he said.
The former governor further explained on the court case which necessitated the call on him by other members of the Council to stay off the Advisory Council’s meetings, noting that he’s challenging the elevation of nine High Chiefs to the status of Obas in court.
He said his decision to challenge some decisions taken by the government and Advisory Council was not born out of personal interest but to protect the revered traditional stool, adding, “like I said earlier, I bear no grudge against anybody. My going to court boils down on principle. We should do whatever is right and resist whatever is wrong.
According to him, “I went to court in my capacity as Otun Olubadan and not as Rashidi Ladoja to protect the interest of the institution. We are only testing whether what has been done is legal or illegal. It is not directed towards anybody.
“The aspiration of anybody from Jagun to Olubadan is to become Olubadan and we have to protect that institution and resist anything that we feel cannot pass the legal test. Governor Seyi Makinde in his defence for the amendment of the Chiefs Law is that the House of Chiefs has not been meeting for a long time.
“But, there is a letter that prevented them from meeting right from the first tenure of late Governor Isiaq Ajimobi and the letter has not been rescinded. These are the issues that need to be trashed constitutionally. I am not suing the affected people and organs of government as Rashidi Ladoja but I am suing them as Otun Olubadan who must protect the interest of the institution”, High Chief Ladoja added.
The former governor remarked that people are being emotional about the development, submitting that “we have seen a situation whereby husband and wife that have filed a divorce suit are still living together under the same roof”.
High Chief Ladoja said the outcome of the meeting was successful, stressing that “we are here to see Kabiyesi, the meeting is a successful one. We deliberated on the constitution of the Chieftaincy Dispute Resolution Committee that ought to be exclusive right of the members of the Olubadan Advisory Council”.

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun,  Alli Okunmade II on Monday called for proper welfare of the inmates of the Correctional Center to truly reflect the new name recently adopted by the para-military agency hitherto called Nigeria Prison Service.
Oba Balogun made this call while playing host to the new Deputy Controller of Corrections of Nigerian Correctional Services (NCC), Abdul Jeleel Odunlami in his Alarere residence. He praised the government for the new name given to the agency, but said the government must work its talk.
Olubadan, through a statement by his Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola which was made available to journalists in Ibadan said the inmates could still become useful citizens if given correct orientation and welfare befitting human beings.
According to him, “the initiative of the government to change the name from Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) to Nigerian Correctional Services (NCC) is a welcomed development and in tandem with operates in advance countries. Going into such places should not amount to total write-off but should be a place to be sober and develop acceptable behavioural pattern.
“This can only come into manifestation in a conducive environment where all forms of human degradation are not encouraged. I’m appreciative of what you are doing in your centre here at Agodi as just relayed by you and it is my hope and belief that with necessary support and cooperation of all the stakeholders, there would be expected change in the lives of your inmates whenever they regain their freedom”, Olubadan added.
Earlier in his brief remark at the event which had in attendance the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, Ajia Olubadan, Chief Suraj Abiola Iyiola and Mogaji Odugade, Tunji Ajala and some others, the visitor, Abdul Jeleel Odunlami disclosed that the orientation of the Centre had changed in tune with the new name.
He explained that in line with the new policy directive, the Agodi Centre where he was posted to about a month ago had engaged in various activities to truly make the Centre live up to its name. For instance, he explained that the Centre “is in partnership with The Polytechnic Ibadan on how some of the inmates that wanted to upgrade themselves academically could do so at the Centre”.
The DC, NCC, Agodi who said he came to the Palace to pay homage used the occasion to solicit for cooperation and support of his host and other critical stakeholders in the metropolis, stressing that such assistance could come in any form considered useful and beneficial to the inmates, adding, “we need assistance in various forms towards making our inmates presentable. At times, when we present them in court, some of them appear in tattered cloths.
“We appeal to Your Majesty to help let the residents know that all of us have responsibilities to the inmates. They are our brothers and sisters. If census of the inmates at Agodi today is taken, ninety-nine percent (99%) of them are Yorubas, meaning that only one percent of them are outside of the region”, he added

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Lekan Balogun, on Saturday pleaded with organised labour to shelve the strike planned to begin on Tuesday nationwide.

Oba Balogun, in his message on Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Day anniversary, issued in Ibadan by his Personal Assistant on Media, Mr Oladele Ogunsola, urged the labour leadership to have a re-think.

He said the labour unions, which comprise the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), should explore ways of resolving the vexatious issues instead of the planned strike.

“The labour leaders should prevail on their members to bear with the present administration, with the mindset that no problem could be solved with another problem,” the traditional ruler said.

He equally enjoined the Federal Government not to overstretch the people, saying there must be tangible measures to reassure them that the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda was truly for real.

“I plead for dialogue between labour and government, and in dialoguing, there should be openness and understandin

”Let us bear in mind that where two elephants fight, it is the grass there that suffers. Let’s be mindful of the effect of a total paralysis on our battered economy.

”Consider the sick, consider the pupils and students from our nursery schools to the universities, among several others, who will bear the brunt.

“I want our labour leaders to cast their minds back to the last prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the effect on our students

“How do we compensate for the loss of a whole academic session in the lives of the affected students?

“Such loss is eternal, because it is not possible to wind back the hands of the clock. That’s just an example,” Oba Balogun pleaded.

Olubadan, however, acknowledged the position of the labour movement vis-a-viz the plight of workers and the generality of the people.

He noted that things were really bad and living in the country was becoming hellish for the people day by day.

”But in spite of this we need to apply caution, considering the short time of the present administration so far and in view of what it inherited.”

The Ibadan traditional ruler also described President Tinubu as a man of his words, saying there was no reason to doubt his ability and capability to deliver on his campaign promises.

He charged the President and his team to come up with some urgent decisions and actions that would cushion the effect of some of the already rolled-out policies.

The Olubadan reminded the country’s leadership that human endurance was not limitless and it should not stretch Nigerians beyond the limit.

Oba Balogun equally congratulated Nigerians on the anniversary and enjoined all to be thankful to God for keeping the country together irrespective of the myriad of challenges the country has encountered.

“Looking back, at 63, we may be tempted to write ourselves off as a nation for not having attained the expected and commensurate height.

“But, if we think deeply, we will see the need to appreciate and acknowledge the divine touch of God in the affairs of the country and for which I felicitate all.

“Let’s remain optimistic, committed and steadfast with unshakeable faith in God for a better and prosperous nation that all of us will be proud of once again,” he stated.

Members of the Olubadan Advisory Council has insisted that  they would not sit for a meeting with one of them, Otun Olubadan and the former governor of the state for taking them to court over elevation to Obas.
This decision by the members of the Advisory Council who were elevated as Obas and Royal Majesties last July by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun,  Alli Okunmade II was taken because of the court case instituted against their elevation by the Otun Olubadan.
The statutory meeting of the council scheduled to hold Monday could not be held owing to the insistence of the members
High Chief Ladoja had challenged the elevation in court in which Olubadan, all Ladoja’s colleagues that were elevated as Obas, the governor of the state and the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General in the state were all sued in the suit still pending in court.
Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who is the Balogun of Ibadanland and the next in rank to the Olubadan seized the floor immediately after the opening prayer was offered by the Palace Chaplain, Pastor Olusoji Adediji and announced that all the High Chiefs that became Obas had resolved not to hold any of the Advisory Council meetings that the Otun Olubadan would attend.
He said, “we have resolved not to sit with our friend and brother, High Chief Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan pending the conclusion of his court case. Since he has taken us to court, we have all hired lawyers and waiting for the case to commence. What I’m saying here today is the decision of all us that got elevated and served with court papers instituted by the Otun Olubadan.
“It is a settled matter in Yoruba parlance that people don’t relate as friends after court matters (a kii ti kootu de se ore). Not until the court case is decided whichever way, we have resolved not to hold any meeting with High Chief Ladoja in attendance”, Oba Olakulehin added..
Though, Olubadan made attempt to water the matter down with an appeal that there was already a rapprochement between him and the former governor, and that the meeting should go on as scheduled, but, others in attendance sided with Oba Olakulehin as Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade disclosed that all the other members of the Council were meeting at the Balogun’s house. He hammered it that Oba Olakulehin was speaking for all of them.
Ladoja in his brief remark disclosed that the invitation sent to him bore Olubadan Advisory Council, a member of which he is by virtue of his position as the Otun Olubadan, noting that if the meeting had been tagged ‘Obas’ Council’s, he would not have bothered to attend.
He maintained that he had no any personal issue with any of them, but fighting on principle. “There is no need to be personal about it, it is a matter of principle and I have no animosity against anybody. It was widely reported when I came to Kabiyesi to offer explanations on my action and we are still talking”, he added.
When it became glaring that the meeting which also had in attendance Ashipa Olubadan, Ashipa Balogun and Ekarun Olubadan, Obas Biodun Kola-Daisi, Kolawole Adegbola and Adebayo Akande respectively could not be held, motion for adjournment was moved, seconded and the meeting ended without any of the items on agenda discussed.

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II on Thursday asked heads of teaching hospitals and medical centers owned by the Federal Government to come up with robust and workable approach that could stem the Piqued by the incessant industrial actions in the health sector.
The monarch who expressed worry , pleaded with the heads of the Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centres under the aegis of the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals (CCMDFTH) to address the ugly tide because of the attendant negative consequences
While playing host to CCMDFTH who paid him a courtesy visit as part of the activities lined up for the Committee’s 103rd regular meeting being hosted by the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, the Oyo State capital said the notoriety the nation’s health sector has assumed of recent when it comes to industrial action “calls for concern and serious brainstorming”, adding that “the ongoing conference of the Committee is a veritable platform to thrash out the issue.
Olubadan, in a press statement made available to journalists in Ibadan by his Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola stated “I urge you to please use this occasion of your gathering together to discuss the menace and proffer workable and lasting solutions to the problem. In doing this, I want you to be open-minded and considerate of the general situation in the country. You are to bear in mind that where two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. Let the love of our people be your guiding talk- point .
“It is an established fact that there are some irreducible minimum conditions under which you can function effectively and efficiently which I believe the present nation’s leadership would not deny. Let your relationship with it be more of dialogue rather than confrontation, bearing in mind that the sincerity of purpose of Mr. President is never in doubt from his displayed posture so far”, he added.
While wishing the medical practitioners a happy stay in his domain, Oba Balogun promised that he would interact with his colleague Obas across the country to lend traditional voice to their demands as occasion may demand, asking them to feel free to relate with the traditional institution as partners in progress for the well -being of the citizenry.
Emem Abasi Bassey,a professor and the Chairman of the Committee in his courtesy remark urged Olubadan to use his influence to help in whatever way he could to assist in addressing some of their challenges described as numerous. “We have a lot of challenges which we won’t bore you with, but, we can’t but mention that of power supply. Your hospital here, the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan is groaning under a heavy burden of electricity bill.
“We would appreciate it, if Your Majesty’s could help reach out to the state government in a way to come to our aid. This is just one out of our various challenges which we are brainstorming over at our meeting. On behalf of our Committee, I thank Your Majesty for making time out to receive us as our meeting would not complete without this visit”, the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital CMD added.
