A policeman, Abraham Arowogun, attached to the Kajola Police Station, Kajola town, in the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, has committed suicide by jumping into a deep well in the station.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, was mysterious to other police officers in the division as well as members of the community especially as Arowogun was not known to have any history of mental instability.

According to the source, the deceased inspector had first shot dead the Divisional Crime Office, SP Timothy Aruehi, after they had a disagreement over money.

Aruehi had received a complaint that Arowogun, while investigating a case, diverted a sum of money to private use.

“Arowogun was investigating a case and the DCO discovered that a sum of N150,000 was involved. He further discovered that he (Arowogun) had actually converted the money to private use.

“The DCO called and querried him for the action. In the course of interrogating him, he stormed out angrily. He returned with a gun which he used to shoot Arowogun dead,” a source said.

The police source added that after killing the DCO, there was confusion in the station as other officers fled for safety.

“After killing the DCO, he knew that what he did was unprofessional and unpardonable in the police force. He just left the scene and jumped into the well at the back of the station,” the source added.

The corpses of the two policemen were said to have been deposited in a mortuary in the Ondo State General Hospital, Ore.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation had commenced.

“It was an unfortunate incident; but we have begun investigation. The command is very saddened and our hearts are heavy. We are doing everything possible to dig further into the matter and talk to our officers and men to avert a recurrence,” the PPRO said.

Odimayo was allegedly abducted by some hoodlums in his house at Igbotu in Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State last Thursday and killed by the suspected kidnappers.

After killing him, the abductors allegedly threw the deceased corpse into a river between Sabomi and Igbotu communities in the Ese Odo Local Government. The police arrested eight persons among whom were Francis and his son.

Harrison said, “It was very disheartening that this could still be happening in this state.”

She explained that one AK49 rifle with 21 rounds of live ammunition was recovered from David, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.

The commissioner, who advised the people of the state to be security conscious, said the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.

But Francis said he was arrested by the police because his son was involved in the abduction of the politician, saying he never participated in the crime.

However, David confessed to the crime but said they did not kill the deceased.

“We didn’t kill him, we left him beside a river when the vigilante men were chasing us, he was very weak, we did not kill him,” he confessed.

The unknown gunmen who kidnapped a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae on Monday on his farm at Ilado village in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, have demanded for a N100 million ransom.

Falae, former presidential candidate of the All Peoples Party was kidnapped on the day he clocked 77.

The gunmen numbering 20 reportedly invaded the farm at about 12.30pm, beat up Falae and his workers before whisking him away in their vehicle and heading towards the state forest reserve.

The spokesman for the state Social Democratic Party, Remi Olayowola, said the abductors had contacted the family and demanded N100m as ransom.

He said, “The kidnappers have called baba’s wife and they demanded N100m, which they said must be paid between today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) before he could be released. They said baba is in their custody hale and hearty, but the money has to be paid before they would free him.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Wole Ogodo, said it had not been established whether the septuagenarian was kidnapped or not.

He, however, confirmed that some Fulani herdsmen invaded the farm and attacked Falae and his workers.

He said, “We cannot say it is a case of kidnapping yet because the information I have said some Fulani herdsmen invaded the farm, beat up everybody on the farm, including Chief Falae. Some of the workers were injured by the attackers.”

Ogodo added that the command had deployed over 50 policemen, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operation, Ishola Adbullahi, in the farm to secure the release of the National Chairman of the SDP, adding that the injured workers had been taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

“This is not the first time the Fulani herdsmen would attack the farm; they had come before and some of them were arrested. So, they came today (Monday) again. I don’t think it is a case of kidnapping until the team that went there comes back before we can establish whether it is a kidnapping case or not,” he said.

The state government, while reacting to the incident, said it was sad that an eminent elder statesman like Chief Falae could be abducted.

The state Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, said the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, had convened an emergency security meeting to secure the release of the Afenifere chieftain.

Akinmade lamented that the act showed the level of decadence in the country and “clearly indicates that nobody is safe.”

He promised that the government would do everything possible to ensure the safety of the man.

The Secretary-General of the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Cultural Group, Afenifere, Chief Sehinde Arogbofa, when contacted on the telephone, described the incident as embarrassing.

“In fact, I don’t know what to say; but this is embarrassing,” Arogbofa said.

Meanwhile, Afenifere, in a statement by the group’s spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, condemned the abduction of Falae, saying security agencies should “track his abductors swiftly.”

The group said the kidnap of Falae, the traditional ruler of Ilu Abo in Ondo State, “has added a frightening dimension to the state of insecurity in Nigeria.”

The statement read in part, “The kidnap of Chief Falae is coming on the heels of recent abductions of Vanguard columnist, Ms. Donu Kogbara, and Toyin, wife of Deputy Managing Director of The Sun Newspapers, Steve Nwosu.

“As kidnappers are invading the south, Boko Haram continues the festival of bloodshed in the north. These are clearly intolerable and the security forces must rise to the occasion by taking concrete steps to combat the mindless lawlessness going on across the country.

“The first responsibility of every responsible government is to secure the lives and property of citizens. We demand the immediate release of Chief Falae and call on the security agencies to track his abductors.”

The Ondo State Police Command on Thursday arrested three men in Akure for their alleged involvement in robbery.

The suspects were said to have escaped from a prison in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, during the November 2014 jail break.

Banji Adedayo, 40; Tope Daramola, 45; and Segun Akinseye, 38, according to the State Police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, were among the gang that had been terrorising the people of Ondo State in the recent times.

Parading the suspects at the police command headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, the commissioner explained that the trio, with two other men, allegedly snatched a Toyota Camry and some mobile phones from one Komolafe Remidayo in Ondo Road, Akure.

He said the Special Anti Robbery Squad, acting on a tip-off, swung into action and arrested the suspects.

Eke added that effort was in top gear to arrest the fleeing members of the gang and also recover the earlier snatched vehicle.

One of the suspects, Adedayo, however denied being a member of the robbery gang, admitting that he escaped during the jail break in Ado Ekiki.

Adedayo, who said he was jailed over robbery, said, “It is true I escaped from the prison and since then, I have stopped robbery and never involved in bus snatching.

“I was smoking my Indian hemp with my friends at one corner in Akure when the policemen struck and arrested all of us.”

A middle- age man, suspected of attempted kidnapping was on Wednesday set lynched and set ablaze by irate mob in Akure, Ondo State capital, few hours after policemen from the A Division of Ondo State Police Command, Akure rescued two persons, a man and a woman from being lynched.

The incident happened at the popular Adegbola Junction where newspapers and magazines were being distributed in the state capital.

The man, whose name could not be immediately confirmed was dragged to the junction by some youths from the Ayedun quarters of the state capital, where they hit him with various dangerous weapons before finally setting him ablaze.

Attempts by three mobile policemen who were keeping guard at the Skye Bank close to the place was thwarted by the youth, who insisted on killing the suspected whom they claimed was a confirmed kidnapper.

Also, attempt by another set of policemen on patrol along the Oyemekun/Adesida Road to rescue the alleged kidnapper was also repelled by the irate mob, who rained pebbles at the patrol van.

However, two other alleged kidnappers narrowly escaped death on Wednesday in Akure following timely police intervention.

The suspects, one Owolanke Oladimeji and an unidentified woman were suspected of being kidnappers locking around to perpetrate evil at Owode and Isolo areas of Akure.

The two persons had already been beaten to the point of death before the arrival of the men of the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police.

Sources however told our correspondent that Oladimeji, 32, had been a psychiatric patient at a traditional healing centre in the town for the past two weeks but escaped from the centre.

It was gathered that after his escape from the healing centre, he was roaming about the streets and unluckily, some youths around Isolo area of the ancient city, at about 7am mistook him for a kidnapper and started beating him .

He was at the point of being set ablaze when a team of policemen rushed to the scene and dispersed the mob who took him to A Division Police station in the town .

Shortly after arrivng the police station, his wife, Ola Oladimeji and some of his relatives appeared at the police station and identified him as suffering from mental illness.

The unidentified woman was accused of being in possession of some fetish items in her bag which were suspected to be instruments of abduction .

An eyewitness said one of the items fell off from the woman’s bag and she was called back to pick the item but refused to do so, the alleged refusal of the woman to pick the item was said to have raised suspicion of the people around the area.

It was learnt that during the interrogation, the people collected her bag and discovered that it was full of fetish items which they said the woman could not give a convincing explanation about.

At this point, eyewitness account said the youths then descended on her, poured petrol on her and set fire on her but she was lucky to survive due largely to the early arrival of policemen.

In his reaction, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incidents said the victims of mob action were suffering from insanity and not kidnappers.

He then warned members of the public to avoid engaging in jungle justice, saying anybody caught in the act of jungle justice will be dealt with according to the law of the land .

“It is improper for people to take laws into their hands. If the people suspect anybody of criminal act, they should report such person to the police.

“The normal thing to do is to report to the police and not to beat or kill the person. Police will not hesitate to deal with anybody caught in the act of jungle justice ” Ogodo stated.
